Don't get too excited yet. Possession of any marijuana at all can still land you in a Thai jail for the time being. However, on a positive note, discussions are taking place on the possibility of decriminalization.
A new movement by both government and private organizations may lead to the decriminalization of marijuana in the near future for its pain-relief benefits.
At a public forum on Monday about the possible decriminalization, four agencies all agreed that marijuana should be pulled from the list of illegal Category 5 drugs.
This does not mean that we’re about to be hanging out at weed cafes a la Amsterdam, but the movement will at least decriminalize it. Whether or how the drugs will be controlled still needs to be figured out.
The four organizations that sent representatives to the meeting were the Crime Suppression Police, Drug Suppression Police, National Agricultural Council and officials from the Council of State.
According to the current Narcotic Act B.E. 2522, the possession of marijuana for any reason could lead to five years imprisonment and/or a fine of THB100,000. The consumption of marijuana could land you one year in prison and/or a fine of THB20,000...

Legalisation would be ghastly news for the police on Koh Samet, Koh Samui and other
places where marijuana (often - supposedly - from
Cambodia) is quite readily available from bars / guest houses which pay off the police.

Its very difficult to get things like this passed when the US government/DEA (DEA=band of thugs) has and is handing out millions and millions of dollars to countries to target their own citizens in the "war on drugs." Just have a look what is happening in the Philippines today and happened in Thailand a few years ago. Lots a scores are being settled in the name of drug eradication. The body count just keeps going on. Its too simple, legalize everything, let the heavy users kill themselves with pleasure, take the money saved not having a war on drugs and set up treatment/rehab centers and educate the younger generation. Yes, way to simple.

A decade ago, a purchaser of a small baggie of grass in a quiet bar on Koh Samet questioned what he thought to
be rather a high price (300 Baht) and was told:
"It's very good. It's from Cambodia - and we have to pay the police."

Bull shit;
None ( at east none i have meet in 35 years) sell anything that comes from Cambodia
most comes down Laos or over from Nakorn Sri Thammarat area

BANGKOK — The military government is urging the public to think again before buying full-spectrum grow lights and reflective mylar to wallpaper their homes with.
While recent news reports might create the impression Thailand was already going up in a purple haze of permissive drug legalization, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam soberly reminded the public Monday that no action has been taken yet.

The response came after media reports came out Friday that the government had already acted to take marijuana off the list of Category 5 narcotics months ago in April at the request of the Food and Drug Administration.
Wissanu said the interim cabinet has yet to issue any resolution on the proposal to remove marijuana from the list of banned substances, and the idea is still being studied...
