BANGKOK – Pol Gen Panya Mamen, a senior advisor of the Royal Thai Police, told the media on Wednesday, 5 Eastern European hackers were believed to have hacked into the Government Savings Bank’s ATM system with the use of Malware virus and escaped with about 12 million baht in cash.

The gang has already left Thailand and the police would seek cooperation from the Interpol to track them down, he said.

From the investigation, Pol Gen Panya said the gang released Malware virus to the autometic telling machines in Phuket. Once a machine was infected by the virus and when a fake card was inserted into the machine, all the cash in the machine would flow out, he added.

The virus then spread to the other 21 ATMs in Surat Thani, Chumporn, Prachuab Khiri Khan, Petchaburi and Bangkok.

The pattern of the hacking by the gang was similar to the one which happened in Taiwan in July, said the police general, adding that the gang had made several trips into Thailand before the thefts which took place on August 8...

Too little too late, and not enough information. Where did they go after Thailand ? What nationalities were they ?

Sweet hack! Closest I have ever come was finding $300 someone had apparently left behind in an ATM's dispenser.

Probability #1: Bulgarians / Bulgarian-citizenship Turks

Probability #2: Romanians

This modus operandi sounds FAR too sophisticated to be Roma (gypsy) crime.

I wonder if it really was a virus or if they were just card skimming. Always seems to be Eastern Europeans tho for some reason.

THIS is about the old-style skimmers:

... but are we to assume that these clever criminals have opened a whole new front of felonious activity?

And did the article about Thailand mean that the machine is emptied of its cash but that Mr and Mrs Jones on their summer hols are
NOT being robbed - i.e. that it's the bank's money disappearing, not the Jones' money. Right?

I remember getting money out of a ATM in Bangkok on Soi 8 once and it was spitting out double the cash.

There was a line for miles with people lining up to use the machine.

This one didn't. I was just walking past and I heard it beeping (the "take your money" beeps). I looked around and no-one was standing near it so I took the money.

About a month later the branch replaced the ATM with a different model.

Yeah that was my money! Just had to run to the toilet as I'd got the squirts and the ATM was taking forever! Came back 2 mins later and no money but a withdraw slip. Must of been mine as I'd drew $300, exactly the same, can't possibly be a coincidence!

POLICE have gathered evidence so an international arrest warrant can be issued for Russian man believed to have stolen cash from many ATMs in Thailand, including Bangkok, Phuket, and other provinces.
Pol Gen Panya Mamen, the chief investigator, said Rustam Shambasov, 29, was caught on surveillance video footage after stealing more than Bt3 million from 13 ATMs last month.

Shambasov's identity was confirmed by a photocopy of his passport used to rent a Toyota Fortuner vehicle before starting a series of ATM "hacks", along with seven other Eastern European suspects.

Panya said immigration records showed Shambasov arrived in Thailand on July 14 - but flew out on August 1 from Suvarnabhumi Airport.

According to police, the Government Savings Bank did not report the ATM hacking incidents to them until this month.

Recent inquiries revealed that there were three teams of ATM hackers with a total of four vehicles used along the route from Phuket to Chumphon, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phetchaburi and Bangkok.

Police said Shambasov's identity was consistent with images found on surveillance video footage at hacked ATM sites in Phuket and Bangkok, so police believed he was one of the key suspects who stole a total of Bt12 million from GSB ATMs in Bangkok and other provinces in July.
