Elderly man drives mobility scooter down 100km/h freeway

A video emerged on social media this week, which shows an elderly man travelling in a mobility scooter down a freeway in Melbourne, Australia.

The footage of the 92-year-old man driving the scooter on a busy freeway was captured by an Audi driver named Bruce Bromley, who shared the footage with Facebook page Dash Cam Owners Australia.

The incident allegedly occurred on the Monash Freeway, in Melbourne's eastern suburb. The road in question has a 100km per hour speed zone, and the incident was filmed at around 2.30pm on a Friday - just before the rush hour.

In the clip, Bruce can be heard shouting: "Move over. You’re on the freeway. You’re not supposed to be on the freeway," before telling the cops: "I just told him to try and pull over and he told me to f*ck off. I’m just going behind him with my hazards on, but the traffic’s obviously pretty dangerous at the moment. If I go off around him, he’s going to get collected. He’s just driving along quite happily."

A police vehicle is seen pulling up behind the scooter about 15 seconds after Bruce gets off the phone with the operator. After being posted to Facebook, the video accrued over 400,000 views and 4,000 shares in less than 24 hours.

A police spokesperson later informed tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail:

"A passing motorist spotted the 92-year-old man merging into traffic in the 100km/h zone and travelled behind him with hazard lights while calling Triple Zero. Police quickly arrived and spoke to the Glen Waverley man and determined he had been reported missing a short time earlier by family members.

He was taken to Glen Waverley Police Station where he was reunited with his family."
