OK, LOL - Cultural Relativity

If you have something so weird, strange or off-topic to post and think it doesn't belong in any other forum; you're probably right. Please put all your gormless, half-baked, inane, glaikit ideas in here. This might also be a place where we throw threads that appear elsewhere that don't belong ANYWHERE end up, instead of having to flush them. FORUM RULES STILL APPLY.

What definition of culture are we using? Or shall we each use our own, to make this even more fun?

"What Is Cultural Relativity?
Do you think your culture is better than other cultures around the world? For that matter, is one culture superior to another due to its morals or values? These complicated questions are getting at the notion of cultural relativity, which is a fancy way of saying that all cultures are different but one is not better than another."

Are our Western culture and values "the truth"?
Do we have a right to "educate" others on cultural matters? That they are wrong and we are right?
Or free-range "each to their own"..

Cultural relativity is a theory which postulates that if you travel at the speed of light away from a developing nation such as Cambodia for one year, when you return, the inhabitants of that country will have become seven times more racist and disdainful toward visitors, while you have only become twice as bigoted.

Yes, what I was saying though, in order to talk about cultural relativity, we needed a working definition of culture itself to be agreed upon.

"agree" = joke

For example, though: I don't consider littering to be a part of culture, I consider it to be a social habit. Others would consider social habits to be a part of a culture, whereas I believe the two only have opportunities to overlap. I see culture, somewhat, in the anthropological sense (although I don't subscribe to anthropology, I agree with this) as a creative web of symbols created by a particular social or ethnic group to identify with and make meaning of their lives and surroundings.
