I watched him face to face with cold unblinking dispassion for most of his trial, 'hardly glanced at any other thing in the courtroom - something i had wanted to do for over thirty years since he murdered a friend.
He tried to smile, bow, sampeah at various times - always weedling for a way in. i never gave it to him.

It was a miracle, having that trial - for many many people (the only one that was well conducted, with a clear narrative that everybody could understand).

He has a deeply simeon nature. A kind of evil Hannaman.
His black monkey magic spun even faster the fury of the Central Committee's insanity. He sensed their paranoia and fed them all the false foul fuel to feed it.

IMO, his part in the whole terrible purge dynamic was far more crucial than is commonly realised.
He was not a minion, or even a senior officer - he was one of the seven serpent heads of destruction himself.
And a ridgy-didge 100% genius manipulating psychopath to boot.

The National Co-Prosecutor of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has confirmed the passing away of Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch, former chief of Tuol Sleng Prison during the Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979).

"The National Co-Prosecutor wishes to inform the public that the Convicted Person Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch, Cambodian, passed away in the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital on September 2, 2020 at 00:51. He was born on November 17, 1942 in Poy Veuy village, Peam Bang commune, Stoung district, Kampong Thom province. He was a professor and the former Chairman of S-21. He was arrested and detained on May 10, 1999 and transferred to the ECCC Detention Facility on July 30, 2007. On July 31, 2007, he was charged with crimes against humanity, grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions of August 12, 1949, torture and homicide under the Penal Code of 1956," said the National Co-Prosecutor in a press release issued today.

On March 30, 2009, it added, the Trial Chamber commenced the trails against Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch and held evidential hearings of witnesses and civil parties for a 72-day period.

"On July 26, 2010, the trial judgment was pronounced, finding that Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch was in charge of S-21 for more than three years, causing the deaths of more than 12,272 victims. Therefore, the Trial Chamber convicted and sentenced him to 35 years in prison for extermination, murder, enslavement, imprisonment, torture and other inhumane acts under the crimes against humanity, as well as willful killing, torture and inhumane treatment, willful causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health, and willfully depriving a prisoner of war or civilian of the rights of fair and regular trial, and unlawful confinement of a civilian under grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions of August 12, 1949," it pointed out.

The trial judgment was appealed by the Co-Prosecutors, Civil Parties and Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch to the Supreme Court Chamber. On February 3, 2012, the Supreme Court Chamber issued an appeal judgment and sentenced Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch to life imprisonment, the same source continued.

Duch’s body cremated in Phnom Penh
The body of Kaing Guek Eav better known as Comrade Duch, former chief of the Khmer Rouge S-21 prison, was cremated today in a Phnom Penh pagoda after he had passed away earlier this morning.

Duch passed away at the age of 78 due to serious illness at 00:51 am today at the Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital.

According to a death certificate issued by a doctor who treated him, Duch died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

His body was sent to Phnom Penh’s Chak Angre Krom pagoda and cremated without a Buddhist ceremony.

Duch fell seriously ill at about 4pm on Monday in Kandal provincial prison where he has served his life sentence after becoming the first Khmer Rouge official to be found guilty by the Khmer Rouge tribunal of crimes against humanity in 2010.

Rob Hamill 'disappointed' he won't be able to face Cambodian torture camp commandant who killed his brother

Kerry Hamill, brother of rower Rob Hamill, was executed after the yacht he and friends were sailing strayed into Cambodian waters in August 1978.

Rob Hamill is disappointed he’ll never be able to sit down with the man responsible for the torture and death of his brother.

Kaing Guek Eav, also known as Comrade Duch, died at a hospital in Cambodia early on Wednesday morning (local time).

The head of the notorious S21 prison camp under Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime was responsible for the deaths of thousands of people, including Hamill’s brother Kerry in 1978.

Speaking to Stuff from his catamaran off Cape York, Australia, Hamill said Duch’s death was “surprising”.

“He seemed very fit and healthy at the trial in 2009, and after the announcement of the sentencing, when he was initially given 19 years to serve, I thought back then that [being released at] 86 was very doable, but obviously not.

“I guess confinement, isolation, solitude – how he treated his prisoners at times – didn’t work out very well for him.”

Duch was the first senior Khmer Rouge figure to face the UN-backed tribunal that had been assembled to deliver justice for the regime’s brutal rule in the late 1970s, which is blamed for the deaths of 1.7 million people – a quarter of Cambodia’s population at the time.

After serving 10 years in prison, Duch died at the age of 77.

Hamill testified at Duch’s trial in Cambodia and, at the time, the former torture camp commandant claimed he could not remember Hamill’s brother Kerry.

And with news of the death, Hamill said he was most upset by the realisation that he would not be able to confront Duch as he hoped.

“There’s one thing I feel disappointed by with his death ... I wanted to meet with him in person.

“He said he would meet with his victims but I sent three invitations, and he refused them all.

“Our plans were to sail up to Cambodia ... and if we had made it, I was hoping to reissue that invitation to meet with Duch, and to talk with him and ask some very pointed questions and see his response.

“That’s the only disappointing aspect of this.”

Kerry’s final “confession” – something all prisoners were forced to write – was dated October 18, Hamill said. It is believed Kerry was executed at least two months after being captured.

He was arrested in 1999 after Nic Dunlop and Nate Thayer found him, so he was in prison for a lot more than 10 years.
