Colloquial Khmer can be difficult to understand at times unless you are familiar with it, i notice it a lot more now living in PP
ive just done a few off the top of my head, but theres loads more, ill add more as i remember them, and will update with any new ones i hear,
anyone else know any that they want to add?


Khnyom > Nhyom - I/Me
Avei > Ey - What/Anything
Chraern > Chaern - A lot
Pteah > Teah - Home
Niyeay > Yeay - Speak/talk
Mok > Mou - Come
Baat > Bah - Acknowledgement particle
Tngai > Ngai - Day
Bonman > Maan - How much/How many
Maong Bonman > Maong Maan - What time
Brap > Peyap - Tell/say
Dollar > Riel - $
Bram > Paem - Five
Bram Mouy > M'Mouy - Six
Bram Pi > M'Pul - Seven
Bram Bey > M'Bey - Eight
Bram Buon > M'Buon - Nine
Dop Mouy > Mouy Dop - Eleven
Dop Pi > Pi Dop - Twelve
Dop Bram Bey > M'Bey Dop - Eighteen (11-19...etc.)
Mouy Riel > M’Riel - One dollar
Mouy Neak > M’Neak - One person
Mouy Kbal > M’Kbal - One head (of cattle)

In certain provinces, most noticeably, Kratie, people will pronounce broom as om-boh instead of អំបោស (om-baoh). Also, the word for "where" is spelled as ឯណា (ai-naa), but most people will only use ណា. Ex.) Where are you going= តើអ្នកទៅឯណា? (dtaar-neak-dtouw-ai-naa) will instead be said as តើអ្នកទៅណា? (dtaar-neak-dtouw-naa).

Lots of the colloquialisms/slang seems to be around getting rid of the ‘r’ sound.

Candy - Skaw Kroab —> Kaw Kob
Tuktuk - Rhomot —> L’mot
Even the word for spicy I think should be ‘hur’ but everyone I know says ‘hul’

Another very common one is removing Muoy and just using M’...

Like:
M’Riel - One dollar
M’Neak - One person
M’Kbal - One head (of cattle)
M’Ngai - One day

Dop Mouy > Mouy Dop - Eleven
Dop Pi > Pi Dop - Twelve

often becomes Mouy-'n'-Dop. Pi-'n'-dop

The added n adds smoothness.

Just tried Jamie's list on our 11 year old from the province. She simplifies nearly all the words but hal is still hal. These people love hal food, the hotter the better just like Thais.
Our daughter was the best reader in her class last week, remarkable after only one year of school. The little one is also the best reader in her class. These kids are remarkable but still struggle with Khmer bad habits like poor planning and preparation.
