What Is This Vowel?

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

What Is This Vowel?

Post by Zhivago451 »

ខ្ញុំស្រលា[ញ់]អ្នក

What is that vowel above ញ្? The ់

How do you pronounce that? I have been studying the Khmer alphabet and all the vowels and no matter what source I go to I do not seem to be able to find that vowel anywhere to grab the pronunciation. It seems to be a rare vowel. Or is it a vowel? Appreciate the help in this matter guys. Thank you very much in advance.

Not a vowel. It's a diacritic called 'the bantaq'.

yeah its not a vowel, and its not rare, its fairly common, it kinda shortens the sound,

here are some common words off top of my head that have it...
យល់ - Yol - to understand
អត់ - Ot - No/Not
ស្លាប់ - Slap - Die
ត្រង់ - Krong - Straight
ចង់ - Jong - Want
អង់គ្លេស - Ongkles - English
ឆ្ងាញ់ - Chhnganh - Tasty
ស្តាប់ - Sdap - Listen
ខ្វល់ - Kvol - Care/Worry
រស់ - Ros - to Live
ច្បាស់ - Cbas - Clearly
ប្រាក់ - Brak - Money
នាក់ - Neak - People
សម្លាញ់ - Somlanh - Sweetheart
សក់ - Sok - Hair
ប្រដាល់ - Pradal - Boxing
សម្រាប់ - Somrab - For
របស់ - Robos - Possessive word/belonging to
ណាស់ - Nas - A lot/Very
សំខាន់ - Somkan - Important

and also when a weak consonant has the ា ea vowel, and the ending consonant has ់ it changes the vowel from ea to oa, for example in the word មាន - Mean(to have) & មាន់ - Moan (chicken), also examples are the words ស្គាល់ - Skoal(to know) & គាត់ - Koat(him/her)

And what is this character called? ឯ
I know how to pronounce it but I can't seem to find it anywhere on my keyboard or anywhere that instructs vowels, consonants, or anything. But it appears in the words "where is" នៅឯណា

Thanks in advance ^_^
