Preah Vihear Temple to be restored

Portions of the Preah Vihear Temple will likely be restored using aid from China, India, Russia, and Belgium, according to the director-general of the National Authority for Preah Vihear.

Kim Sedara, director-general of the National Authority for Preah Vihear, said yesterday that the aid from the donors was discussed during a meeting on Tuesday.

Mr Sedara said the Preah Vihear Temple has five entrance gates which are in dilapidated condition and so far China promised to repair the temple body and gates one to three, while India promised to help repair gate five and the northern stairs, while Russia promised to help with gate four.

Mr Sedara added that Belgium, China, India and Russia will also help create a database for the ongoing repairs.

“Right now, we are preparing documents for our government and those countries are also preparing their documents to their respective governments before the agreements are signed,” he said.

The new Preah Vihear museum had its official opening only two weeks ago.

Museum in Preah Vihear ready to open after 10 years preparing

A new museum near Preah Vihear temple will be inaugurated on Tuesday, 10 years after the project began. The Samdech Techo HE Eco-Global Museum consists of 11 buildings on a 177-hectare plot of land in Choam Ksan district. It will present artefacts from the nearby temple and related heritage sites, as well as exhibitions on local culture, flora and fauna.

“The purpose of creating this museum during the war time with the neighbouring country is to show the world that Cambodia does not need war, we need only peace, to preserve the national heritage, to transfer knowledge from the past to the public and to educate the locals to love their national heritage and disseminate it to others,” said museum Director Som Piseth.

Unesco provided technical support for the project, with the finances partly supported by the Cambodian government, by funds from Prime Minister HE and from other donors. Piseth was unable to provide information about the project’s costs.

Landmines are still a problem around the Preah Vihear temple area. When the guide tells you not walk outside of designated areas, you should listen.

Preah Vihear, Cambodia News: On the morning of September 13, 2018, the Ministry of Defense's Protection Unit at Preah Vihear Temple cooperated with the CMAC (Cambodia Mine Action Centre) to clear the area of mines.
