Khmer vocab help

I recently heard a local refer to someone else as a guy who " nihyey plio plio." Now I know plio used with food means bland. I was wondering if the expression was similar to perhaps the English "a tasteless speaker" I.e. someone who cannot distinguish between suitable and unsuitable topics of conversation. In any case the impression was that to talk that way had a pejorative sense. Thank you for the help.

Sorry UT, but plio plio is not the same as pleu, they are two separate words. I do live rurally and yes the locals have a dialectical pronunciation, but I have been speaking for many years now and know the word used was NOT pleu. Thanks for having a shot at it anyway.t

I think you meant Pleav, if it is used with the food means bland. I have never heard anything close to Plio Pilo. Maybe this is a dialect that i have never heard in my surrounding. However, it is make sense to say " Niyeay Pleav Pleav" meaning that you are speaking something meaningless or something that is relevant to the topic that people are discussing or something sound really stupid.

If you are saying something stupid, people would make fun of you that you are speaking Pleav Pleav or you have been eating too much MSG lately. Putting too much MSG would make the food taste bland.

Hey, that was quick Samouth and I'm sure you are right. However I am certain that your "e" and my "I" represent the same vowel sound, so they are closer than it might appear. So, the lady at our local hang chap houi complained about a competitor's bai sac chhruk saying it was "plio" or "pleo" if you will. Maybe I heard the final vowel wrong, but I could swear the locals give it a vowel shift. All of which is to say I accept your translation and I'm certain your vowel representation is the educated one. Thanks again.

"hang chap houi", just of your information, all khmer language lover and learner, hang chap houi mean grocery shop.

BTW, it is good to see you begin posting rural khmer slang again. I am from Sihanoukville and there we don't have many slang also we don't even have accent compare with people from other provinces. I am happy to help you understanding all these rural slang and in general I like to discuss about khmer language.

Since Jamie has a private tutor, khmer language thread has been remained silent for awhile.

Username Taken, your understanding of khmer is great, i guess much better than Richard.
