PHNOM PENH, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Thursday exported its first batch of bananas directly to China as part of increased cooperation between the two countries within the framework of Belt and Road Initiative.

Cambodian Agriculture Minister Veng Sakhon and Li An, economic and commercial councilor of the Chinese embassy in Cambodia, attended a ceremony here marking the first shipment of the kingdom's bananas to China.

"It is another milestone in agricultural cooperation between Cambodia and China, particularly under the Belt and Road Initiative," Sakhon said, expressing his profound gratitude to China for opening its market broader for Cambodian agricultural produce.

"It will not only help boost bilateral trade volume, but also importantly contribute to improving the livelihood of rural Cambodians through job creations," he said.

The minister said the Southeast Asian country is expected to export about 130,000 tons of yellow bananas to China in 2019.

Ngin Chhay, director-general of Cambodia's General Directorate of Agriculture, said the export came after the two countries signed in August last year a protocol of phytosanitary requirements that paved the way for the export of yellow bananas from the kingdom to China.

He added that last month, the General Administration of Customs of China approved the first five Cambodian banana plantations, along with their five packing factories, to export the bananas to China.

"Today, we export, for the first time, five containers of more than 100 tons of the bananas to Shanghai directly from the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port," he said.

I kid you not. China has graced the first shipment of Cambodian bananas with a special welcoming ceremony.

On May 28, a reception ceremony for the first shipment of Cambodian bananas exported to China was successfully held at the Shanghai Longwu Imported Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market, organized by the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the PRC, the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Beijing, the Shanghai Municipal Agricultural and Rural Affairs Commission, and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Hainan Province. This is the first time that Cambodia has exported produce to China, marking the successful and mutually beneficial cooperation of the two countries under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

In an effort to promote agricultural, economic, and trade cooperation under the BRI, in July 2017, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of PRC established the first batch of ten overseas agricultural cooperation demonstration areas. One of these is the Cambodia–China Tropical Ecological Agriculture Cooperation Demonstration Area, located in Kratie in northeast Cambodia. Focusing on the banana industry, this demonstration area has established industrial standards in line with local realities accepted by the Cambodian Agriculture Department and successfully received banana export qualifications to China.

The first batch of bananas exported to China left Phnom Penh in Cambodia on May 9 and arrived at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Phase-5 Terminal on May 22. This batch of bananas comprised five containers and weighed 100 tons with a total value of 63,800 USD (approximately 440,000 CNY). The five containers held high-quality bananas produced by the Cambodian companies Green Island, Longmate, Long Sreng Hua Jian, Grand Land, and Sovann Reachsey.

It works out at around 56cents/kg - which seems pretty good if you are selling them by the 100 ton load.
(63c if they meant tonnes, not tons)

Hang on - the report said valued
that might be landed value in China, not price received.

Do we have any experienced banana compradors online?

Cambodia’s banana exports surge thanks to increasing demand from China
Cambodia exported more than 235,000 tonnes of fresh yellow bananas in the first nine months of 2020, up 225 percent year on year, according to a report by the country's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
VNA Sunday, October 04, 2020 15:42

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia exported more than 235,000 tonnes of fresh yellow bananas in the first nine months of 2020, up 225 percent year on year, according to a report by the country's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Ngin Chhay, director-general of the ministry’s General Directorate of Agriculture, said that shipments of the bananas have seen a substantial increase since China acknowledged that they hold up to its phytosanitary standards.

The volume of yellow banana exports will continue to increase in the future as orders from China pile up and more companies expand their cultivation areas, Chhay added.

Yellow bananas are a prime product for export because they are durable and don’t ripen quickly. One hectare, which can be harvested three times over two years, can produce 60-73 tonnes of bananas per year.

The ministry reported that Cambodia exported 157,812 tonnes of yellow bananas last year, most to China and the rest to Vietnam and Japan./.

Cambodia exports over 200,000 tonnes of bananas in five months
Cambodia shipped some 205,024 tonnes of Cavendish bananas to foreign markets from January to May, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
VNA Wednesday, June 02, 2021 10:00
Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia shipped some 205,024 tonnes of Cavendish bananas to foreign markets from January to May, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

China is the biggest market for Cambodia’s fresh bananas by importing nearly 180,000 tonnes, followed by Vietnam (25,113 tonnes), Singapore (480 tonnes) and Japan (333 tonnes).

Banana is a Cambodian key agro product exported to international markets together with rice, rubber, cassava, cashew nut, corn, pepper, bean, mango and vegetable.

Last year, the country exported over 300,000 tonnes of fresh banana abroad, generating some 450 million USD as income.

Shipments of the bananas have seen a substantial increase since China acknowledged that they hold up to its phytosanitary standards. As orders from China pile up, more companies expand their cultivation areas.

By the end of last September, banana investment companies had cultivated 30,000ha, up from 10,000ha compared to a year earlier.
