Cambodia Breaking News (Preah Vihear): People in Preah Vihear made a lot of money by selling grasshopper to Thailand.

Ms. Thon Sreymom, said every day the sellers sold grasshopper to Thailand through Anses border. Each seller sells from 20 to 25 kg and it costs 120 to 170 Baht for 1 kilo. The dealers make a profit of 60,000 riels to 80,000 riels per day, by buying from farmers in Preah Vihear and selling the insects across the border. However, the grasshopper season lasts only two months per year. Besides selling grasshoppers, the vendors also sell some wild plants and other vegetables.

According to Mr. Mok Barang, a grasshopper seller, every day grasshopper sellers from Cambodia are selling 500 kg to 1 ton to Thailand during the season. This year there are less grasshoppers than usual. He bought grasshoppers from people in Kampong Thom to sell to Thailand.

A Thai person said that grasshoppers are popular for making Thai food. They like to deep fry them and eat them with papaya salad. They are buying grasshoppers from Cambodia because they don't have enough in Thailand to satisfy local demand.
