Shortage pushes cashew prices up.

The price of fresh cashews has jumped by about 30 percent over the price last year due to shortages of the nut and the fact that the harvest will not get into full swing until early next month.

A lack of investment in technology to process the fresh cashews has also pushed up prices.

Oum Uon, the president of a cashew nut association in Kampong Thom province, said fresh cashew prices had risen to about 8,500 riel (about $2.12) per kilo, compared with 6,500 riel ($1.60) per kilo last year.

He added that the processing, packaging and distribution costs of cashews made up the shop price of $15 to $17.50 per kilo.

Mr. Uon said the yield for cashews this year would be less than the previous year because of unfavorable weather. This pushed up prices.

Thiv Vanthy, the director of the agriculture department in Kampong Thom, said the weather had varied for cashew farmers in different parts of the province, but there was a high standard of fresh nuts.

Besides the local market, the main markets for fresh cashews were Vietnam and Thailand.
He said that prices had climbed from about 3,000 riel ($0.75) to about $2 per kilogram this year, from 5,000 riel ($1.25) last year...

Cambodian farmers cash in on high cashew prices
Thu, 4 May 2017
International commodity prices for cashew nuts are rapidly increasing due to lower supply from Cambodia and Vietnam which is driving up profits for the Kingdom’s farmers, according to industry stakeholders.

The shortfalls of cashew supply into the global market have decreased by around 40 percent this quarter due to lower production in Cambodia and Vietnam, although demand has not diminished.

Lor Reaksmey, spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, said that Cambodian cashew production has continually declined year-on-year, with a 15 percent decline in 2016. The Kingdom exported a total of 87,853 tonnes last year.

“The amount of exports decreased last year because of lower initial prices and lower yields caused by climate change,” he said, adding that low-quality nuts were only selling at around $1 per kilo.
“However, the current price is higher because of large demand from the international market.”

According to Reaksmey, current prices reached $1.5 per kilo with Cambodia having a total area of cashew cultivation around 64,840 hectares, of which 40,745 are currently harvestable.

While he could not give figures for diminished production during the first quarter of this year, the Indian business publication Financial Express reported that prices had reached historic highs of nearly $5 a pound ($11 a kilo)...

Cashew growers brace for fall in prices
Cashew nut prices seem to have fallen slightly at the end of harvest season compared to March this year, according to the cashew nut association in Kampong Thom province.
Association president Oum Uon said prices for raw cashew nuts dropped from 7,000 riel ($1.75) per kilo in March to about 6,000 riel ($1.50) in May.

Processed cashew nuts are selling from $15 to $17 per kilogramme, with prices higher in Cambodia than in export markets, he added. Mr Uon said only South Korea and Japan were the current export markets for his association.
He said that there is high demand for processed cashew nut abroad, but his association does not have a budget to purchase cashews to store for processing to fill the demand...

I wonder how many years cashew crops will be down before it stops being news and becomes the new normal. Also, processed cashew nuts are available at Psaar Toul Tom Poung for $10 per kilo if you know the right lady to ask, and she likes you.

Cambodians that sell cashews will tell you there's more stolen and sold on the black market/locally than ever get to export.

There's also a lot of foreign entities artificially dropping the prices on crops and causing local farmers who have financed their farm to go out of business, which then leaves them available for confiscation at a bargain.

Would those foreign entities be mainly from one country? Perhaps the country that is buying Australia?

The ones I know of, yes. Not saying there aren't others from other countries doing this though.

I've always found it strange that although grown here, have not seen cashews bagged up here at a decent price. I'm sure you could buy at the market but I've not seen any lately. Instead all the mini marts are selling the expensive "Tong Garden" bags from Thailand, with Cambodian (I presume) cashews inside. Why someone not took out the middle man and packaged and sold here and exported too?
