A sad indictment of today's world

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

A sad indictment of today's world

Post by Hotdigr »

This is a VERY interesting read and imo, a very sad indictment of where we are and where we are heading.
Thanks for this go to Lucky Lucan (who I know posts here under a different moniker then on TOF).

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc ... nd/399356/
Its a very long read, but also a fascinating look on the evolution of us as a modern animal

I would also have posted this response on TOF, but TTM has banned me because I called Kenny Svay a tourist and pointed out that I was the person who identified an obvious sock puppet, not TTM himself! Ahh well, shit happens. Maybe I will end up joining the exclusive club of those who have copped lifetime bans twice. Funnily enough there was no offensive language used or forum rules even pushed. I think TTM needs to read this and look at his own development as a human critically and Scobz ( who I have actually gained some respect for) needs to rein in his out of control, power hungry mods.

Yeah, I read the article and it is beyond belief that these students are so sheltered that they cannot read a book without a nanny. This will create a generation of delicate wee flowers who think that by rights they are the centre of the universe. (Can only get worse.)

But when I read the article, I was thinking "only in the US, haha", and then I heard about this book being banned in NZ : http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/bo ... -complaint
An award-winning Kiwi novel has been banned after a complaint by conservatives, potentially sparking a wave of new restrictions on books with sexually explicit content.

The teen novel Into the River by Auckland author Ted Dawe has gone through a considerable censorship battle.

The interim ban makes it a crime to supply, display, or distribute the book in any way - if one knows about the order. Individuals and organisations who knowingly supply the banned book are liable of fines of up to $3000 and $10,000 respectively. The ban includes schools and libraries.

This is totally ridiculous - ban a literary novel for teenagers and never mind the internet porn or the violence on TV and in films. And this book is also banned for adults!! PLEEZ. :fool:
We are indeed in the era of the great dumbing down. And it's everywhere.

Could this possibly be a sign of degeneration that is becoming ever more pervasive throughout the Western, so-called civilized world? I tend to believe it all started in the 90ies (was it?) when all of a sudden the term political correctness appeared. Well, those students will suffer a rude awakening when they enter the workplace.

Hotdigr, agree 100%. The Turd Man is an out-of-control megalomaniac

Scooby is not a bad guy at all, very civilised and patient in most cases. I don't think any of the other mods are problem, scoffer is...scoffer, Playboy still thinks Queen Victoria is running an empire, Joon is just crazy with frustration imo, and desperate to appear sophisticated, not power-hungry. She's not a bad person for a bilker, LOL
Jesus loves you...Mexico is great, right? ;)

Not sure if that comment was meant for me or Vlad, parrot. But if it was meant for me my reply would be that I couldn't give a rats arse if my 1 week ban was over turned or not. No one can stop me reading the forum, simple as that. And right now as far as contributing, there is no way in hell I would want to be connected with what has to be the most insane example of internet bullying of all time. The entire thread is almost Nazi like in its rabid dogging of a guy who at worst said he had a PhD when maybe ( probably) he doesn't. I still don't believe it is anything but the ultimate troll to be honest.
If your comment wasn't aimed at me ( its a bit hard to tell with your double quote) then Vlad can look after himself I'm sure!
