$204 is the new minimum wage

This joke wage negotiation/setting certainly most benefits about 100 or 200 Chinaman factory owners along with some Vietnamese, Thais and Malaysians, lol...
...the unions are obviously nominal entities which say nothing but merely gulp and nod whenever the government decides how little to pay the workers,
...
Do you think this "raise" comes close to meeting current levels of inflation...?
(Cambodia is reminiscent of jolly ol' England during the industrial revolution, when children were "employed" to die slaving in cotton textile factories...)

Re: $204 is the new minimum wage
Yet most people (if they have a job) is getting 100-150 which is even more absurd. Or 30-50 if you're unlucky enough to be an underage domestic worker in your rich uncles mansion.

Re: $204 is the new minimum wage
I think you have to compare it to the monthly salaries paid in our neighbouring countries. You can see what has happened in China with monthly salaries paid now compared to 10 to 20 years ago, and now China's workforce is way too expensive which is one of the reasons some big companies are moving out.
To add to all that, the $205 is the minimum and clothing factory workers, etc, do get a lot of add-ons and overtime just as restaurant workers, bargirls get tips.

Average monthly basic wage of garment workers in selected Asian countries between March 2020 to March 2021Tootsfriend wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 12:39 pm I think you have to compare it to the monthly salaries paid in our neighbouring countries. Monthly basic wage of garment workers in selected Asian countries in 2020-2021
Published by Leander von Kameke, Jan 3, 2023
According to the results of a study published in July 2021, workers in the garment industry in Indonesia earned the highest basic monthly wage compared to other major garment-producing Asian countries. In the time period between March 2020 and March 2021 (the first full year of COVID-19 pandemic), Indonesian garment workers had an average monthly basic wage of 243 U.S. dollars. Cambodia and Myanmar followed in the list with average monthly basic wages of 190 U.S. dollars and 157 U.S. dollars, respectively. When taking the seven countries surveyed into account, the estimated global average of monthly basic wage of garment industry workers was estimated to be worth 200 U.S. dollars per month in this time period.

Re: $204 is the new minimum wage
Alright so according to that ^^ Cambodia is already too expensive to produce garments, as much cheaper labor is available elsewhere. So the question is, does the workforce have the required skills to move up from producing garments?

Re: $204 is the new minimum wage
Wonder why is Thailand excluded from the list?
min wage is currently 10,620 baht ( apx $295) and expected a 10-15% increase by years end
and accounts for why over 650,000 khmers are working in Thailand (and i would venture many more Illegally)

Re: $204 is the new minimum wage
I don't know any Khmer working for $100-150 per month
Perhaps ten years ago
Good luck finding any worthwhile help by advertising $204, either - there's enough choice that 99% won't work for that

You must only hangout with fancy Khmer people then.Jerry Atrick wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 1:00 pmI don't know any Khmer working for $100-150 per month

10 years ago $1 a day was not uncommon, these days it tends to be $5 per day which the locals consider a fair pay, $10 per day for fysical labor.
Though during covid a lot of "regular staff" were clearing no more than $100-$120, I imagine it's still much the same.
I know a couple of locals making $200 or more but they are few and far between.
