Why aren't there any real taxis in Sihanoukville?

Even North Korea has real taxis (and a functioning public bus system). Tuk tuks are bulls**t - slow, unsafe, uncomfortable, no aircon, no meter, stupid arrangements for luggage, etc. This place has an airport for Christ's sake; they could at least have a small fleet of REAL taxis servicing the town.

Yes, there are a few. I refuse to consider them "real" taxis.

If by "real taxis" you meter meter taxis, I think the only city in Cambodia to have them is Phnom Penh, and it's a relatively recent addition there.

Do you think there is enough business in SHV to support a small fleet of meter taxis? If there is it's a bit surprizing that niche hasn't already been filled. Perhaps you've identified a buisiness opportunity. Got investment money?

If you don't see something it usually means that there's no money in it. I've. got a drawer full of driver driver's cards, but they just want to go long haul - back to PP, to Koh Kong, or Kep. Interestingly, on Beach Road across from Lead Zephyr a Russian Taxi Co. was just finishing their build out. I can read Cyrillic. Don't remember too many words, but I made out the taxi and motor car parts.

they have them car style tuk tuks, but no meter taxis, sihanoukvilles so small, tourists wouldnt need to use them as they stay down serendipity and expats have their own form of transport, they would only be handy for the people that live on the outskirts of town, as also mentioned Siem Reap is in a simular boat,
tbh the only time ive used taxis in PP (there have been a few times) is when ive gone out drinking with some khmer lady friends, and theyve had to call one up, theres not been many times ive seen a cab i can call down, like you can in say bkk or somewhere

Baht bus's like in Pattaya, with a route from victory hill to the beach downtown via Independence beach would be a winner, then during high season add Otres, but you would have to have an extra rider with an AK-47 to deal with the tuk-tuk mafia, and/or be run by the police.

Meter-cab? Its going to be a few years, first you have to get a real airlines to be able to fly into Snookyville and not Vietnamese owned Angkor Air or the new one flying Chinese turboprops that are copies of a shit Russian design. An airlines that actually flies somewhere like Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumper or even PP direct with real airplanes.

Snookyville will be an also ran in the tourist industry and not attract real tourists (except Korean/Chinese gambler/package tours, & backpackets), until it: Get a real airlines, cleans up the trash and the beach's, gets a real hospital, and develops an infrastructure like good roads, sewers, trash collection, street cleaning, etc.
A real 4-star casino would help also instead of the little mom & pop style casinos that are now all over the place.
