No matter what time I look at this website, there are ALWAYS more registered Brits online here than any other nationality. Always more Brits than us Americans. What gives? Did we lose a war or something?

Yep, economic crisis being one of them, hit the U.K more than the U.S. things being of course that you have less opportunity in a small country than a big one.
Nonetheless I think the main reason is cultural, the U.K have a long history of colonization the Brits are used to go around the world, the American not so much. I would be curious to know the proportion of the population holding a passport in both countries.
And of course the logical reason that england is a country which is easy to love when being abroad. Only way you can appreciate the food, women, weather, the press and such is in memory after not being there for some years.
I think even Japan is a better place than the U.K
