Robotic China... the end to cheap labor jobs?

The South China Morning Post reported today that Shenzhen Evenwin Precision Technology Co., a manufacturing company that makes cell phone parts and other electronics, is planning to replace roughly 90 percent of its 1,800-person workforce with machines, leaving roughly 1,600 people out of work. The company, whose chairman became a billionaire in March, is planning to spend $322 million on a new factory in Dongguan that will use “only robots for production,” according to the outlet, with a small human staff of 200 to keep tabs on the machines.

I find the most amusing/ironic part of this article to be:
Foxconn, China’s largest employer and the company that assembles parts for the iPhone and iPad, is working with Google to develop a line of robots capable of replacing human workers.
Lol... seriously? Google is working to make building iPhones cheaper? So. Confused.

Why wouldn't they try to lower costs?

OD is asking why Google would want to lower costs for iphones specifically, which belong to their competitor, Apple. Silly question, really. The answer is that getting into the business of designing and building robots capable of such fine and delicate manufacturing greatly benefits anyone who invests in that technology and is then able to sell it to many manufacturers. Google is after bigger, long-term gains from such research and development.

Would someone like to tell me the capitalist dream again please, and how it is supposed to help the majority over the few?
Perhaps they could start by reminding me how a monopoly brings about higher quality goods and services?

how about how technical jobs servicing said robots lead to higher quality of life than sweatshops. increased and more consistent production results in increased demand, resulting in increased jobs taking care of the increase in robots to meet said demand. change is hard, but progress is essential. the idea that we shouldn't use the means available to us, as a species, to be as efficient as possible in the name of creating more jobs is ludacris and extremely short sighted.

The death of a human begins with the birth of a machine. 100% unemployment is the goal. I hope that one day only the ones that want to work do. We have reached the stage in evolution where we could be self-sufficient as a global species thanks to robotics.

I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.

^this

we will need a completely different economic system if 100% of people are unemployed. even if 75% are

theres self driving cars coming that will put taxi drivers out of work. and i read that there are projects to create Artificial Intelligence systems to run hedge funds better than any people could

whether you're a truck driver or have a Masters in economics your job could be replaced by a machine soon enough

more jobs for programmers though :)

they already exist. automated trading will make you rich if you have the cash for the software license and the seed to let it run with.

or it can make you rich if you figure out how to write and market an even smarter one, lol.

there's already high frequency trading. and trading systems based on rules that somebody programmed in. Now theres work to make an AI that can learn for itself and figure out its own strategies
