PM calls for suspension or reconsideration of Pchum Ben following COVID discoveries at Phnom Penh pagodas
Prime Minister Samdech Techo HE has expressed grave concern over the re-emergence of COVID-19 during the Pchum Ben festival, following COVID outbreaks at several temples in Phnom Penh.
The PM asked that the celebration of the festival be reconsidered or suspended in the context of the risk to public health.
He warned that after the Kan Ben or Pchum Ben festival, there could be a disaster for the Cambodian people because of COVID 19.
The PM’s remarks came in an audio message released on Thursday, September 23, 2021 and follow the discovery of COVID at several of the capital’s pagodas, including Wat Chumpouk K’aek.
The Prime Minister said, “I…am very concerned that after Pchum Ben, the number of sick and dead people may increase, which poses a serious risk to the nation.
Not just in cities, but in rural areas as well. Now, some rural areas are starting to explode with COVID…as now urban dwellers travel to the countryside, rural people travel to the city, especially through monasteries, forming a cross from one area to another.”
The PM has instructed Deputy Prime Minister Aun Porn Monitorn, Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Mam Bunheng, and other relevant parties, as well as the Minister of Cults and Religions, to seriously consider this matter.
The PM says that he wants to consider suspending the Kan Ben and Pchum Ben festivals.
If the Kan Ben festival is not postponed, find a way to reduce the number of gatherings, to allow at least one person to go to the Kan Ben temple for each shift.
The PM asked for the understanding of all monks and Buddhists all over the country in the face of the difficult situation of the current society.
