I imagine most would have top shelf coverage, and I guess there will be those few who are probably a little foolish in having none. I recall reading of a chap who in his mid seventies who found top cover to have become too costly for him, and if I recall correctly, that figure was heading toward four or five grand a year.

How much are you paying?

Most Expat Insurance Co. will kick you out when you turn 70. Better keep some cash ready for your own good. A Insurance Co. can / will decide what they pay and what not, better to make your own decision.
Cambodia has some very good specialists and Hospitals. You only need to find them. The same counts for Doctors. My experience in Cambodia has been superior. I have no Health Insurance except for my own wallet. I can decide what i spend for what.

I pay about $200 per month for $1M cover, 62 years old. I live in Laos.

But premiums will depend on your age and if you have any existing medical conditions when you take out cover (I don't).

In that case, you've signed up with the wrong company! There are plenty of reputable, international companies who insure you for life, regardless of how many claims you make and how ill you become after signing up. By EU law, they also can't increase your premiums as a result of your claims. They can only increase them in line with others of the same age.

Really? The last time I was in Cambodia I shattered my ulna with the American doctor at SOS who x-rayed and slabbed my arm telling me "You really don't want to stay in Cambodia for orthopedics - get to Thailand."

Can I have a hint of the insurance provider (if not possible to disclose providers on this forum) because mine charges me €3,732 per year without deductible. I had a minor health issue just once this last decade and was reimbursed the $200+ I paid SOS. Looking back and adding up what I paid year after year, I hope they really can be relied upon when or if the inevitable or unfortunate happens.

Afraid I dont know how much medical insurance would be as I am uninsurable. I imagine at my age $2000 per year would be about right if I had no pre-existing condition. The good news is that treatment is much cheaper here than in my home country. My treatment there would be $10,000 per month but here I pay only about $100 per month (excluding monthly travel costs to Phnom Penh). I see an excellent specialist in Calmette Hospital and two out of three times he does not charge me. Watch out for the fine print in the policies - read every word. I have read Forte's policy and note that they exclude almost every disease known to man.

There’s always an option. The easiest is to pay someone to cover your medical expenses. But cover what exactly? Routine care? Emergency care? Catastrophic disasters? For people who don’t have the discipline to save or unlucky, like me, it’s a solid choice.

The next option is to save enough to cover all foreseeable situations and save on paying premiums. Requires discipline to save, foresight to calculate what’s needed, and the luck to not need until the savings are enough.

Final option is to not care and turn to ‘go fund me’ when things happen. Those in the last category get a mention in CEO News.

Stay safe out there everyone!
