Accommodation wanted

After spending a half hour fruitlessly looking for a better place to lob this, I figured this would do. OD is out of town without reliable Internet, and the General will be sleeping one off by now to recharge for tonight.

Mrs Stroppy and I are looking for long term accommodation over the next month. Where we are has given us a good soft landing in Cambodge but we are after more permanent lodgings.

I'm trying to tempt vlad into pimping himself to us, that could make an interesting post. In the meantime...

We're chasing either a house (Khmer style is fine as long as it's secure) or minimum 2br apartment up to $350pcm plus utilities, will commit to 6 months. Ideally, the closer to TTP market, the better. A/c in the main room and bedrooms essential, furniture optional as we're collecting our own. Good landlords that speak some English would be a sensational bonus.

I don't play nicely with other children, so shared houses are not an option - actually, that's a lie, the cat's a bit of a bastard.

If you're in a place or know of a place you can recommend, please let us know - your assistance would be greatly appreciated and no doubt generate Big Karma (beer, if you prefer).

Where I previously stayed in Psar Daum Skov is a just a bit south of TTP maybe 5 min by Tuk Tuk/moto. I was paying $330 for a 1 Br. They have 2 Br as well not sure the rate. Very LOCAL area but nice -- you will need to go up to TTP for anything ex-pat. 5 story building. Landlord lives on the bottom floor and each of the 4 floors above it has 3 units --- two 1br and 1 2br. -- large rooms, quality furnishings, spacious balconies with unblocked views.

Landlord is highly educated and obviously wealthy. His English is probably better than mine. Built from ground up a few years ago, and plans to convert the building into a medical clinic in about 5 years when his son finishes med school and gets enough real life experience to run his own clinic.

Since the family lives there no problems at all with security. In door Parking downstairs , 24/7 security guard, security cameras on every floor and 12 camera monitor station in the guards booth.

Only issues were A) No lift B) A lot of barking dogs in area

I only left because I felt too isolated living there by myself.

Doubt you can get a 2br for $350 though as that is what he tries to get for 1br.

PM me if interested -- I can give you his contact.

Thanks for that Rain Dog. I might sit on that one for a couple of weeks if I can, and come back to you for a contact if we don't find anything closer - we're looking for something in walking distance if possible as tuktuk costs are killing us at the moment where we are, even at 'not tourist' rates. We will buy transport (seriously considering our own tuktuk), just not yet.

A tuk tuk to TTP from PSD is 5000-6000 riel tops --- but yea I hear you. i used to walk it in good weather -- about 20 to 25 minutes. Just drop a line if interested.

Ps you can also look around Boeng Trabek which is a bit closer.

Yeah, I've got the local guys down to 8,000r from Sovanna to TTP (and 12,000r from Sovanna to Riverside) which I think is almost too brutal - although they'd pass it up if it wasn't 'good for us, good for them'. They whinge and moan like [edit, sexist comment about village women removed by author on reflection] but still squabble among themselves to get the fare. Mind you, if their card game is running hot, they barely lift their heads.

Yea --- I used to go to Sovanna -- the drivers there are almost as bad as the ones on Bkk1 when it comes to price gouging. I guess they figure if you are coming out of Sovanna, you have money to burn --- I used to just ignore them and walk a block up the street just to get a decent price. I am not that cheap - just hate getting played for a tourist.

I used to pay $3 going from PST to Riverside and $4 going back at night (or early morning as the case might be)

Sounds right. These guys 'own' the corner outside our apartment near Sovanna and obviously get enough newbies to make it worthwhile playing the game. We walked away each time they started at 'six dollar' or even higher, and made a point of getting our $2 ride from the very next street to drive past them a minute later. One of them tried the "drive in the opposite direction for 20 minutes to boost the price" stunt, even after we'd agreed on the destination on his map, and that worked precisely once for this mob. When you see the uninitiated paying whatever the opening bid is, you just want to slap them for making it harder for those that live here. Same as other service industries, I'm told.

What about Murray's? It's walking distance to Sovanna, and jogging distance to TTP.

Nowhere is better than the Russian market. Vladimir can attest.
