Malaria prevention in mosquitos

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Malaria prevention in mosquitos

Post by Clemen »

"A microsporidian impairs Plasmodium falciparum transmission in Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes"
Fungus (just let it go Stern) prevents mosquitos from being infected with malaria.
Sciency bit: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-16121-y

Found it in English:
"Scientists have discovered a microbe that completely protects mosquitoes from being infected with malaria.
The team in Kenya and the UK say the finding has "enormous potential" to control the disease.
Malaria is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes, so protecting them could in turn protect people.
The researchers are now investigating whether they can release infected mosquitoes into the wild, or use spores to suppress the disease."

It's possible of course, this technique doesn't kill mosquitos, so no knock on effects from that. It's also not GMO, it already exists in nature, so it isn't adding a completely new variable in its current environment. Could change if/when they transplant it somewhere else. Cane toads FTW

I hope so and fast, Cambodian medical staff have been using anti-malarial drugs, such as chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, to help Covid-19 patients. Now I here there could be a world shortage.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
