Had no idea that he was already well known to the CEO community and is a fellow former ELT teacher. Are they still in business?

It looks like at least his health has improved somewhat. I imagine though he will end up in jail. If he's lucky, he may just get deported.

The other newspaper (https://tuoitrenews.vn/news/society/202 ... 52942.html) mentions a few additional details:
The foreign man arrived in Vietnam in June 2019 and is staying in Ho Chi Minh City illegally with an expired visa.

Armed robbery is punishable by 7 - 15 years behind bars, according to the Penal Code of Vietnam.
Also, there is a photo of the knife:

Briton jailed for robbing Saigon convenience store
By Hai Duyen August 20, 2020 | 09:54 am GMT+7

A Ho Chi Minh City court on Wednesday sentenced a British man to five years in jail for robbing VND2.6 million ($111) from a convenience store earlier this year.

John David Ablett, 44, visited a store on Nguyen Trai Street in the city’s District 1 at midnight on February 9, and saw a lone woman employee, Luong My Linh, 25, on duty. He brandished a knife and stole the money from the cash register.

When he left the store, Linh called the police, who chased after him and apprehended him within 100 meters from the store.

He told the court he had been drunk and gone to the convenience store to buy some beer, but came up with the idea of robbery when he saw there was only one woman employee.

"I was unemployed for several months and had no money."

But just happened to be carrying a knife? Or did he pick one up off the shop shelf?
