Cambodia Cable TV is screwed

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Cambodia Cable TV is screwed

Post by rtz345 »

If you have cable TV from CCTV you will have noticed all the Fox channels and some others disappeared the other week leaving virtually no English channels. The staff at CCTV said "technical problem will be back on in three days!" Well two weeks later no change. I have heard through some industry insiders that they haven't paid the Royal group the Fox licensing fee so were cut off. The Royal group owns most of the licensing rights for most western channels here but yet fails to broadcast them on their own shitty One TV service themselves. Looks like PPCTV is now your only choice for any half decent service.

I don't know which provider they were using at the hotel I stayed at in Kampong Thom recently, but the only English language channel was Al Jazeera. And the dish wasn't aligned properly so it was blocky and unwatchable.

Anyway there's AU ABC News channel on YouTube, and with Kodi you can get most AU/NZ channels and a lot more if you look around. I have PPCTV and never watch it.

Losing the MLB and F1 hurt the most.... Wicked Tuna hurt too...And the channels they replaced them with are trash.... The RT was watchable at times and now it has been replaced with something else.

It is funny that 20 years ago cable TV in Cambodia was not only better than it is now but probably better than most non english speaking countries anywhere. You normally got CNN, HBO, Cinemax, ESPN, other movie channels and a bunch more. Now when I stay in a hotel you may only get CNN (a mixed blessing to be sure). Another reason to pine for the days of old!

IPTV seems to be the way forward although the internet can be very hit and miss here.

sure, in the past it was virtually free back-to-back UK premier league football games - you have to pay a ton for that back in the West
