If You Were A Nail-Biter, When Did You Stop and Why/How?

Bit of a weird one. I was an aggressive nail-biter for many years. To the point that I would often expose the nail-bed on many fingers. I'm 47 now, and have not bitten my nails for about 15 years. I've no idea why I stopped, I just did. I don't even know why I bit my nails in the first place.

All I can remember now is how sore and painful my fingers used to be, and still don't understand to this day why I did it.

Can any of you remember when or how you stopped and why? Just curious...

I think it goes away with age. I don't recall an ederly biting his nails.

Scratching your ass more often & having less teeth has it's benefits i guess.

One can achieve that quicker with local products : spicy food & meth.

I bite my nails. Turns out my dad felt bad and explained how this happened. He said we had a baby sitter who used to do it and he regrets not changing the baby sitter.

I still am a nail biter and it doesn't bother me (but I don't bite to the quick). I can go months without biting but then once I start I do it regularly for a while.

The babysitter bit your nails or you copied them?

I bit my nails when I was a kid. My mother got some nasty-tasting liquid that is supposed to remind you when you absentmindedly bite them. I don't think that worked well so she bribed me to stop, probably £5 or something.

Think I stopped about the time I took up smoking.
Maybe I should go back to biting my nails.

I still do bite my nails quite badly. It often amazes me how many people notice. It would never cross my mind to look at someone's hands unless there was a specific reason. Same with feet. How come people always seem to notice when you're wearing new shoes? It's usually women to be fair but still... I couldn't describe the shoes of a single one of my colleagues, and I spend 8 hours a day, day-in day-out with them.

Used to when I was a kid. Stopped when I began developing a taste for the fairer sex.

I went to INDIA, in 1998

I was so disgusted by the filth of New Delhi, the black crap that came from my nose when I blew it and the layer of filth everywhere, I didn't want to put my fingers anywhere near my mouth. In a mere 10 days my nails grew and I clipped them.

Never bitten them since.
