What happens if a marriage in Cambodia isn't consummated?

My girlfriend has a female friend who recently got married.

She doesn't love the guy and got married due to family pressure.

She doesn't want to have sex with the guy and has not had sex with him, which is causing some tension in the relationship.

She call my girlfriend and asked for advice.

My girlfriend told her she'd better have sex with the guy otherwise it will cause big problems with her family, they'd owe a lot of money to the groom's family, etc.

I told my girlfriend that there's probably nothing the guy's family could do about it, but my girlfriend assures me that this is the law in Cambodia, and it's enforced, that the wife must have sex with her husband otherwise her family owes money back, maybe the "sin sot," I don't know.

Unlikely to be any law. There was a young girl married an old Khmer not long ago and didn't consummate and broke it off and he was $6k out of dowry pocket with nothing he could do as I recall.

She should just leave, tell the village chief he was unreasonable and unable to satisfy her. Should cause him loss of face enough to not persue

Even cars have a test-drive. Why should finding a wife be negligent?

And motorbikes, if I wanted a new Kawasaki I need to know how it handled on tight corners and what the acceleration was like......... :dragonchase:

The last thing you want is a bit of tank slap when performing a difficult manoeuvre

It is crazy to pressure someone into marrying someone they don't want to marry.

She needs to make smart decisions from here on.

Hello, it's Cambodia

Mrs Cargo's brother was pushed into marriage with a province girl coz his mother saw her as a good carer for herself in old age. Last I heard they were separated already.

How long since they got married? There most definitely is a dowry payback if the marriage is annuled/cancelled quickly. The parents from both sides will generally have a talk about it, but either full or partial refund is expected. She should have made it clear before getting married that she really wasn't interested.

How hard is it for a wife/girlfriend to consumate a relationship with a hand or a blow job. If that's not her style she should let one of her friends stay the night and do the job for her.

FTFY- I think most forum members have a level of English above that of a bar girl. Nothing worse than hearing barangs lowering themselves to “I go now”, “she have problem”.. etc. Stop it.

As your lawyer I must advise that none of those things would amount to consummation in law.
