Cambodian woman gives testimony about life after a shoe box from Operation Christmas Child

SAN ANGELO — A speaker from Cambodia told students from San Angelo Christian Academy about how a shoe box changed her life.
Kim Vance lived in South East Asia growing up in a poor, rural village.
"We had no clean water, no electricity and no hospitals," Vance said. "I lived with my four brothers and my parents were divorced.
Vance said she would have to finish her work on the farm then walk an hour to school.
"My parents didn't like me going to school because they didn't get to," she said. "They wanted me home cleaning, cooking and watching the other kids, but all I wanted to do was go to school."
One day in 1993, when Vance was 14, she was walking home from school and saw a church.
"The pastor asked me to come to their Christmas program," Vance said. "I didn't know what it was, but I was excited because they said they had food for me to eat."
She brought her brothers along and after they ate, they stood in a line but Vance didn't know for what they were waiting for.
"I saw the person in front of me was so happy," Vance said. "I saw this green and red shoe box and I was so curious what was in there."
Vance waited for her turn and when she was handed a box, she noticed the logo on it that said "Samaritan's Purse."
The shoe box drive is called Operation Christmas Child operated by this international relief foundation.
