Tax changes

Post by Simon_Miles »

Hi guys,

I understand there's some changes to taxation coming up, and the school I work at woll now be deducting 10% tax.

Is it realistic that theh would pay me a higher salary to cover this?

Is it realistic that most schools/businesses will increase their employees salaries to keep their net payments the same?

Any advice would be appreciatesd, as it works out at quite a chunk of your living money.

Thanks!

I'm not aware of any major recent tax changes, the employer here is supposed to deduct tax before paying the salary anyway. The tax laws have certainly tightened up over the past few years and revenues have become more realistic. However, it sounds to me like you have been paid under the table for a while and now your employers are trying to comply. No big deal with that but you shouldn't be stiffed just because they weren't in compliance, assuming that's what happened. Basically they should have been taking that 10% from your salary from when you started and you should have been made aware of this. I can't remember all the tax bands here but for someone earning an average EFL/ TEFL salary it probably is around 10- 12%.
