It's happening, believe me.

Today,a good friend and neighbour of mine handed me a $100 bill. It was obviously plastic. The blue band running top to bottom had no 'edge' to it, and to add insult to injury, it had the word copy printed on the lower left side. The friend I am talking about has lived here for 13 years and I trust him implicitly. He was well pissed off. He drew out $800 or so and counted them quickly,as we all do. The fake bill was nestled in the the middle of the bills.

Now, before all the idiots and trolls jump on this post, I would like to make it clear that this post is not about being careless at an ATM when checking your money. We are all guilty of that. The point of this post is that fake bills are appearing in ATM's in PP.

To make matters more serious, the ATM he used was Phillip's Bank which only has 4 ATM's in PP, and,indeed, the whole country.

This is happening, it is not fake news.

Be careful every time you go to an ATM.

I knew that already as a very credible friend told me the same story, but about the bread bank.
Funny thing he told me they didn't care that much.
Now I always check the paper, at least of the 100s.

Probably a covert program by the central bank to promote use of Khmer Riel. Next time take out KHR 400,000 just to be safe! And buy a really big wallet.

From the beginning that ATM's came to Cambodia, I used them. Never got any problems or fake bills.

ABA ATM's have a new confirmation screen before the cash comes out advising to check your bills and inform them immediately if any notes have issues.

I wonder if that's because some ghost notes have slipped through, or if they're just being proactive and covering their arse from people claiming to have recieved ghost money days after they withdrew the cash.

I'm not so keen on standing at the ATM showing off how many $100 notes I just withdrew, though.

(admittedly in my case it's not usually many lol)

I'm seeing posts on facebook far to often for it not to be true. I'm now considering only withdrawing over the counter for the near future, I think I would cry if I got a fake $100 out of the ATM as I know the bank would never admit it and reimburse me.

One of the stories I've seen floating around is that the fake notes came via an over the counter withdrawal.

Fake notes? I have enough trouble with the real ones.

Slightly off topic but related I reckon - last week I received US$100 notes from a Cathay Union ATM and didn't notice some had a bank name stamp presumably from when a reconciliation took place at the end of a trading day. Used to be quite standard for banks to stamp the top note of a pile with something and the teller scribble a signature, old style.

Passed them to my wife who tried to break them into smaller denominations at FTB Bank the next day but they refused - they just said "...not from us". Weird...wonder if they would refuse them if we depositing them into out account?

Spent them in a supermarket without any problem
