It's '91 or '92, my friend has a demo tape of the The Prodigy 'showcasing' it to a festival organizer. His reaction: "garbage". My friend keeps on pushing, manages to get a space on the B-stage, early afternoon.
I am there, behind the lighting console, this band comes on stage...mindblowing...new sounds...bass that turns all your contents in your stomach upside down. They tear the place down. Between each song they run back stage and return even wilder.
Next year, same festival they are headlining on main stage. Not behind console this time but on the 4th floor of FOH. Prodigy starts, Keith climbing in trusses, crowd goes beserk. All of sudden he runs from stage to FOH and climbs all the way up to where i am standing. Dances a bit, looks at me and gives a little nod with this crazy frantic smile. Climbs down, goes back on stage. 60K crowd go mental. Great show. Nice memory.

Not my cup of tea but still better than the bullshit sounds of today, and it sure has been a long time since anyone lit a fire under the music industry's ass. I went to a Toto concert a couple of months back; more talent in a single fingernail than all of "todays" greats put together. Sadly for a generation that thinks a DJ is a musician, there is little hope of hearing real music ever again

I saw the Prodigy live in a club called "Nu-age" all the way down in grubby Dover just after "Charly" was released. Incredible night, totally different sound to what was around back then & their later albums like Fat of Land have held up very well versus the usual club stuff from then or even now. #PutYourFkinHandsUp #GimmeABreak. Leroy Thornhill was playing in Pontoon recently if I'm not mistaken? Some of the Dirtchamber Sessions stuff of his also plays well if just listening in the gym or wherever with headphones on. Good music all the same for me anyway, a sad loss.

Ok grandad... Tell us more about how music was better when you were young. And what's "real" music? Please enlighten us. You must've have not gone to any real shows/ festivals/ concerts in about 35 years if you think the industry is dying. Who's Toto btw? Nvm. I just checked. It's a bunch of old and not so great guys...

What you fail to understand is that the same generation that thinks that DJs are musicians also thinks that Chet Baker, Steve Miller Band or John Coltrane are geniuses. You have to have a foundation to create bass music that is original and pleasant to listen to. I'm sure most DJs out there are musically more eclectic than you.

You must be the kinda guy that gets all worked up when a younger crowd puts on some booty poppin music in a girly bar...

Gotta admit, the first time I heard Smack My Bitch Up (c.1997/98), I thought he was saying Snap My Picture. It all made sense a few years later.

I saw them around the same time at Quest in Wolverhampton. They were incredible. Sad to see the guy kill himself while still so young. The amount of ecstasy he probably took over 20 years possibly didn't help his reported depression.

As for Toto? You mean Africa Toto??

Ecstacy doesn't cause depression. You can't use it for 20 years anyhow, as your vesicles empty out. The more you use it the quicker they empty. Takes ages for them to fill back up again, which is why users stop using it. He said he was going to top himself when he'd had enough, and 49 is middle-aged, not young. So he'd probably just had enough.

I would say taking large amounts of illegal drugs can't help someone if they are predisposed from suffering from depression. I'm pretty sure that you fell a form of depression when you come down from pills/coke/speed etc. Multiply that by 20 years? He wouldn't have walked away unscathed.

Saw Hawkwind and Motorhead live back in the 80s when music was still real . Also Bowie , Dylan , Young , Talking Heads . Is it just me or is there no real musical talent around these days ?
