Arrived yesterday from the airport into Phnom Penh and now at the airport from Siem Reap. And then it struck me. The ubiquitous beggars on the streets, I don’t see them anymore. Saw maybe one a jai. Where did they go? Did the PRC hordes relocate them?

Also saw the Protek security sporting a western armored vest. Petite Khmer guy wearing a giant vest . He was swimming in it.

The adjective petite is used for women, not men.

You must of overlooked them. Check the riverside, although your probably right. I class them as professional working gang's. But hell look past the high rollers and there is plenty of poverty around.

Definitely not as many around as there used to be.
Back in the day, there was a bunch of them permanently camped 24/7 in front of Lucky Supermarket, Sihanouk Blvd.

But, yes, there is still plenty of poverty to be seen.

When I first washed up, they used to always haunt stop-lights. Sitting in a tuk-tuk at a red-light and it would get swamped. I used to naively hand out dollar bills.

A few days later I smartened up a tad and started only handing out 100 riel notes. When my tuk-tuk driver noticed he wryly said, "You're getting smarter, my friend."

Now I rarely give anything to anyone.

Just a reminder,,, only two months to Christmas.

Asked missus about the absence of beggars on the streets of Phnom Penh. Answer is they have been banned from begging. Where are they now, no idea. Maybe they were shipped back to their home provinces to take care of the cows and chickens.
