What's up with Kampot ? Is it next in line ?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! What's up with Kampot ? Is it next in line ?

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Kampot looks like the next destination on the Chinese hit-list - sorry, development project list. The discussions on Kampot are all over the forum and hard to find, so here's a Kampot thread for general discussion: Old Kampot, new Kampot, what's happening, and what are the future plans ?

This is a thread from the business forum on the new Kampot development project on the coast nearby:
Kampot: $18M ADB plan for new town and seaport.

There's a new cement wharf about 6km Sth of Kampot town. Last time I looked it appears work has stopped on that site. Guessing its the red square on the map.

Who cares, it is fucking boring after a week and too many tourists.
But they are developing something that for sure because there is an huge number of lorries going through that town at any time of the day.

yeah, you need a reason to be in Kampot for more than 3 nights. nice quiet decompress from city life- Takeo is better for that!
there are a lot of people here with litttle hobby farms scattered through the countryside- lot of French with pensione styl gh- and many more building.
there is an Amazon style cafe in the rice paddies near me- and doing plenty of trade!
locals mostly.

The red square or the other bit - hard to tell really - is the development of the new international ferry terminal with ferry services planned for Phu Quoc, Snooky, Koh Rong and Koh Kong. Meant to have full customs and immigration controls as well.

The main developments are about 12km out of town on the Snooky road - a deep sea container port / refinery / rice mill factory / smaller port. Also lots of factory spaces cleared and flattened already in the area. Have a look from the top of Bokor and you can see whats going on. Got some spare dosh lying around then buy some land out there and wait for the Chinese to buy it. Makes total sense as the train line is 1km away and space already cleared for sidings. The new highway between Snooky and PP is 30 mins away. Land is also reserved alongside the railway tracks for the 4 lane Kampot bypass that will connect to the planned 4 lane Kampot - PP road as well.

You can sorta tell from these photos but it is a bit far for a phome camera to zoom

great pics! thanks a lot for taking the time to post them- gives some perspsective on the scale of this single element of new development here.

on the mundane side of things the traffic popo are in gestapo mode here; undoubtedly economic /social engineering- easy to sell legal bikes here now!
not sure if cleanup per HE instructions regarding masses of dodgy motos or the new governor, who seems keen to clean up CRIME and perhaps general non compliance.
they change the trap location twice a day and target selective enforcement issues on a rolling basis
for example, todays' pogrom was helmets.
wearing helmet-not stopped.
tomorrow probably mirrors.

they will civilize the place and make everyone drive compliant motos.
i don't even have a plate so i have to dodge them.
even use tuktuks
fuckers are like the .mil in precision placing chokepoints on river crossings. bit of a shame as it was laissez faire before in terms of plates, tax and cards. Kampot has been kind of a transition zone to Vn in many ways informally up until now.

chinese are crawling the place like mad via khmer chen agents
seller's market
it is full bubble mode in terms of the initial hunt
Kampot is a notably clean place, with not many bad smells or mountains of rubbish.
