My wife's homemade "Cambodian napalm" is pretty strong, but not so much so that it overwhelms the other more delicate flavors in her masterful cooking. I don't much care for a meal to become a macho showdown.

I've never understood this as a display of masculinity (in men OR women) either - I can tolerate hotter sauces than you. Oh, that's useful and makes you an apex predator, or something.

I won't pretend to either appreciate or understand it but in my few forays into Mexico, it was considered a serious rite of passage. To decline was unforgivable.

Some people actually like very spicy food. I'm one of them. There's no macho show involved, i simply like very spicy food.

By the same logic would people who like bland food all be effeminate? Obviously not.

Somebody check that projector.

I suppose people who indulge in competitions could be...but then life is a competition, so we're all in it?
