Kenyan Volunteer Asked to Show $1,000 USD at Phnom Penh Airport or She Can't Enter Cambodia

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

From the Expats & Locals Living in Phnom Penh group:

'NEED HELP RIGHT NOW

'What strings are here to pull while my KENYAN friend is stopped at the PP airport immigration desk at this moment, with them telling her that she needs $1000 in cash or she will not be allowed into the country? She has a valid e-visa, letter of invitation to volunteer, all my details, and -oh this should be mentioned - she is black....

She has been handed a deportation order just now and is asked to fly back to Malaysia within 3 hours "or you go to prison".

She's sent the gate where a 1.30pm flight flies back to KL. "They completely refused to talk to me and they got three guards to escort me."'

I see that the person who made the initial post, ‎Ramon Stoppelenburg‎, has also posted:
the officer in charge has badge number 56872, but his name is in Khmer script...
Why the fuck would he do that?

Does he think he is untouchable?

You think he's gonna get deported or murdered by the regime for posting a badge number?

No, I don't think he will get murdered, but if someone were to inform the gentleman with badge number 56872 that Ramon Stoppelenburg has been ranting about him on facebook and has called him out by his badge number, the officer could arrange for a visit to his business in which they find some of his documents are not in order which they could use as an excuse to deport him.

Cambodian officials are very sensitive when it comes to being criticised on social media.

What does Ramon do?

Last time it was the acid-tripper being chased by 2 Alsatians, today it's the Kenyan.

Is Ramon for real?

He could pay Cambodians to work in his cinema instead of flying in volunteers from abroad.

I just get the impression he really doesn't like Khmers, or has a kind of Ricketson white knight personality. I don't see it ending well.

Well I read bits of it online - so they ask her to show she has $1000 but she only has $250 now one guy says there are ATMs before immigration which if iirc is true so she should have got the remainder out. I saw that she said her brother would wire it but they weren't interested. Which leads me to assume she was coming in with only $250 which is a small amount....now I agree they should be applying that rule to everyone not just people of color or from certain countries.

Was the lady volunteering at the FLicks or for an actual worthwhile organization? I feel sorry for the lady and that this appears to be racially motivated but....

Coming to a country with only $250 to volunteer regardless if it were for the cinema or somewhere else is not a smart move. Maybe if she had just come as a normal tourist would have been fine.

As I say they should apply this rule to plenty of the western bums who come through here would save a lotta hassle later.

This!

Regrettably not the first time someone has been asked to show cash because he/she had the wrong kind of sun tan.
