Paying with Riel vs Dollars in Cambodia
Phnom Penh: A social media account Khmerlove Khmerlove Khmerlove , has posted on November 15, 2018, saying that they are deeply upset because when they went to pick up and pay for their Cambodian passport, the official would not accept Riel, and demanded to be paid in US dollars.
Is this legal ? Should it be illegal ? Or is this a storm in a teacup ?

Re: Paying with Riel vs Dollars
When I did my WP we had the opposite experience. Tried to pay in dollars and had to go change for Riel because they wouldn't accept. Stupid
Re: Paying with Riel vs Dollars
Strange they don't accept their own currency.
The other day I had to pay import tax at the airport and it was quoted in Riel not USD.

Re: Paying with Riel vs Dollars
It should be possible to pay any bill in Cambodia in Riel. But I guess some people are too lazy to exchange Riel before squirreling the cash away in some tax-free haven.

Re: Paying with Riel vs Dollars
Seems strange. All prices are in KHR.
My partner paid for her passport in Riel.
Could be that the dour old hag wanted her few shekels from the exchange to Riel.
Or could be total BS, also. The Khmer love Khmer gang tend to be nationalist aligned opposition shit stirrers.

I would love to see your reaction if you went to a government office in Oz, trying to pay for your new passport in Aussie Dollars, and they told you to go to a money changer and get Pound Sterling or something. Just sayin'......

Re: Paying with Riel vs Dollars
The prices posted at the Passport Office last time I was there were in USD only, crazy that they won't accept their National currency.

Re: Paying with Riel vs Dollars
Are there other things that you can only pay for in dollars ? I'd imagine that visas and visa extensions are only payable in dollars, but I've never tried to pay in riel so can't say for sure.
Re: Paying with Riel vs Dollars
In Sweden the only currency they accept is credit card
