Today was a first for me. Shopped for a few item from one of the small stores on Victory Hill. Totaled $17.40 US. Offered up 62,000 Riel & $2.00 US$. They refused the Riel & wanted all US$ which I did not have.
I was struck speechless which is prolly best. Just turned & walked away.
2 yrs. ago the pharmacy at the Lions would not accept US$.
WTF is going on?

Most shops have a sign they charge 4.100 for a dollar. Then 40k riel for 10$ is not enough.

Well I did not focus on it much post experience. Just seemed a lill odd. I went round the corner & purchased the exact same items for 2,00KHR less. LOL
Obviously will not visit there again. I'm sure they miss me already. :D

Sounds to me just like a typical episode of the mentally challenged you encounter here on a daily basis.

This practice is very much against recent government initiatives to encourage more use of the local currency. It's only recently become mandatory to display Riel prices as well as dollar ones, which of course is a policy that is not necessarily adhered to all of the time. I noticed my bank displaying a sign encouraging me to take out Riel recently, I'd use them more if they had larger notes in circulation. I've been here a while and have rarely seen anything bigger than a 20,000 note (about $5). :(
