Drugs stores urged to tackle antibiotic overuse
- Ministry of Health officials have warned drug stores to stop selling antibiotics to buyers without a doctor’s prescription because it increases antimicrobial resistance.
AMR is the ability of microbes to resist medication used to treat them, and in some cases can be traced to over reliance on antibiotics.

Ministry spokesman Ly Sovann said Cambodia had recently conducted its first consultation on AMR since 2011. Mr Sovann addressed Cambodians’ willingness to use antibiotics even in cases of benign infection, such as the flu. “I would like to confirm that in 60 percent of flu cases, no antibiotics are needed. But most residents would rather trust the efficiency of antibiotics and can usually buy some at the pharmacy without a prescription,” he said.

Cambodia does not have a single core agency dealing with AMR.It is primarily monitored by the World Health Organisation, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and the government. Reports from hospitals and laboratories are causing concern since more AMR cases are being detected.

Antibiotic resistance crisis worsening because of collapse in supply

The antibiotic resistance crisis which is threatening to render many diseases untreatable is being fuelled not just by overuse of the drugs, but a fragile supply chain that is at risk of collapse, experts have warned.

The authors of a white paper by the Dutch non-profit organisation Access to Medicine say a lack of access to specific antibiotics can lead to less appropriate drugs being prescribed for an infection, or even the use of lower doses – both of which increase the risk of antibiotic resistance – as well as delay for treatment. What’s more, they say, low stocks can lead to price hikes and mean poor quality medicines become rife.

“The right products need to reach the right patients at the right time,” said Dr Jayasree Iyer, executive director of the Access to Medicine Foundation and co-author of the report.

Among the shortages flagged is that of the common antibiotic benzathine penicillin G, which was found by to be unavailable in 39 countries in 2015, including India, Australia and the US, and is the only drug that can prevent and treat the transmission of syphilis from mother to child. The shortage, the report notes, coincided with the growing rise of syphilis in Brazil that has resulted in an uptick in babies born with congenital illnesses.

The report also cites a recent shortage of the intravenous antibiotic and antibacterial combination piperacillin-tazobactam. Caused by an explosion at a Chinese factory that produced raw materials for the medication, the situation led doctors in the UK to warn that patients were being put at risk from reliance on alternative medications, with supplies of the drug restricted to severe cases of sepsis and ventilator-acquired pneumonia.

At present, more than 100 drugs, including a number of antibiotics, are listed by the US Food and Drug administration as being in short supply.
“Antibiotic supply is patchy, complex and at risk of collapsing,” the authors warn.

Better crank up the research into bacteriophages. Sulphonamides are another option, back to the old skool.

Health Ministry issues antibiotics warning
The Health Ministry yesterday instructed people not to use antibiotic medicine when they have a fever or cold, noting that it makes treatment longer.

The instruction was issued as the World Health Organisation and 196 member countries, including Cambodia, celebrate World Antibiotic Awareness Week from Monday until November 24.

Ministry spokesman Ly Sovann yesterday said that use of antibiotic medicine without proper diagnosis and prescription will make treatment longer and could be life-threatening.

“If you just have a little cold or fever, you do not need to use antibiotics. Scientific findings show that about 60 percent of illnesses that cause fevers or colds do not require us to use antibiotics,” Mr Sovann said.

“In the case of having an illness for a few days, you do not need to take antibiotics without a prescription. Just eat more food to gain energy so that you will be better,” he added.

Mr Sovann noted that no new antibiotic drugs have been discovered for a century.

“For 100 years, we have not discovered new antibiotic drugs. So, when we regularly use them without a proper prescription, it will make treatment longer and it could lead to deaths,” he said.

He also said that owners of livestock should not use antibiotics for their farm animals without veterinary guidance.

Phe Thong, a state hospital doctor, said that in recent years, some patients have had infectious diseases caused by bacteria because those bacteria are resistant to the drugs.

“We have met some patients with a virus in their body which is resistant to all drugs and we do not have medicine to treat them,” he said.

Doctors are definitely part of the problem here unfortunately. Many will prescribe what they think the patients expect and do little to educate them. I recently had dengue and the first place I went to prescribed antibiotics and tried to get me to take a bed there. Quickly found a different place where they offered sound advice and didn't try to push any extra costs on me.

Unfortunately many Khmer probably would follow the original advice offered.

The government has largely failed to provide clean water, properly functioning sewage infrastructure, proper community sanitation, food safety standards, air quality standards, and hygiene education.

But yes, let’s allocate these supposed government resources to restrict medications and force people to go to the unqualified and idiotic doctors that they can’t afford anyway. Just don’t allocate too many of those resources though, wouldn’t want to cut into the luxury car budgets.

Your going a bit hard on PP Water Service. I think they do a bloody good job when you look at the area they cover and the price is damn cheap and better quality than for what I pay for in Australia.
