Feature article from the SEA Globe:

By: Nathan Paul Southern - POSTED ON: October 16, 2017
Cambodia has big plans to boost tourism, most of which revolve around a massive influx of visitors from China
The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh has just opened its doors for the day and Chinese tourists are already arriving by the busload, sporting bumbags and armed with expensive camera equipment as they queue for the first tour of the morning.
In Cambodia, these groups, like the many that will follow it, are indicative of the changing face of an evolving industry. Tourism is a key driver of Cambodia’s economy, contributing approximately one quarter of GDP last year, according to a report from the World Travel and Tourism Council.
Once a destination popular with adventurous Western visitors, when Cambodia’s government looks ahead nowadays its focus is increasingly placed on one nation: China.
Whereas many Europeans are tightening their belts when it comes to spending, China has millions of people who, for the first time, have the money and desire to get out and see the world. Last year, China overtook Vietnam to become the number one source of visitors to the Kingdom. And given its close relations with Beijing, Cambodia is in a prime position to cash in.
Men Phearom, director of planning at the Ministry of Tourism, said that the government had implemented a policy of promoting mainly Chinese visitors as part of a wider economic strategy with Beijing...

Account for almost 32% of tourists to thailand now, its the future. To bad only Chinese based companies benifit. They arrive on chinese airlines ,picked and moved around on chinese owned tour bus's, eat and shop in chinese owned shops, restaurants or those willing to pay out 40-50%commissuons.
Hated by all, locals and other tourist for their bad behavior.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Re: What Chinese tourism means to Cambodia
we saw exactly the same in australia . all prepaid vouchers. they even bring the rice in from china for their restaurants straight from china.
NOTHING falls off into the local economy but petrol.
the tour companies even hold their passports and prohibit them from shopping outside the cartel.

That's why Koreans are hated in the Philippines - they book their group holidays with a Korean travel agent, fly on a Korean airline, are met and shown around by a Korean tour guide on Korean-made buses, staying in Korean-owned hotels and eat Korean food in Korean-owned restaurants.
You could be next.

Re: What Chinese tourism means to Cambodia
If they were contributing as tourists, spending in Khmer owned places fair enough they would receive welcome!. In SHV they seem to be assimilating everything to their own tastes such as restaurants and hotels. They don't give a shit who they upset, (mostly us, by taking over long stay guest houses and I hear they ripped off a few locals too) and are takers rather than givers to society. If they were givers they would be providing more than just the road funding (to get them to and from their casinos) and start adding sewage treatment, waste management, recycling. Better medical facilities. Just more laundry and online casinos!
Re: What Chinese tourism means to Cambodia
^But is it fair to say the Chinese government is providing a better infrastructure to Cambodia. And let us not forget they are also now the world leader in Aid donations.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

^As I rated the poster above its good to back up with evidence and not only hearsay. No evidence here from me! But would Cambodia not have the advantage from the Chinese companies operating, by the means of TAX.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
