New airline for Cambodia...but soon?

Post by Soi Dog »

Long overdue and great news for SHV. I hope this competition leads to lower prices.

Cambodia Bayon Airlines will soon import two Modern Ark 60 aircrafts from the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), with plans to begin domestic flights before the end of the year, a company representative said yesterday.

Bayon will sign an agreement with AVIC on Thursday – the same day the company announces its official establishment in Cambodia, said Taing Chung Leang, vice president of parent company Bayon Holdings Limited.

“We will fly regularly from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap every 45 minutes,” he said, adding that flights from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville will be scheduled twice a day.

Chung Leang said the new aircrafts can carry up to 50 passengers and the company plans to expand its fleet to five planes by the end of 2015.

“We see a big potential in domestic flight market as the number of tourists in Cambodia increase annually.”

The firm is in the process of applying for an Air Operators Certificate from the Secretary of State Secretariat of Civil Aviation of Cambodia (SSCA).

Keo Sivorn, director general at the SSCA, told the Post that Bayon was on track to receive their licence by the end of the year.

“Their working process is modern and quicker compared to other companies that we are used to working with.”

Cool as that would be, competition works backwards here a lot of the time.

Chinese made products make me nervous especially something like this. And with only 2 available planes to fly almost non stop daily is kind of scary.

Chinese planes and Cambodian mechanics. What could possibly go wrong?
Engineering & Technology Magazine wrote:The civil aviation authorities of Indonesia and Myanmar have grounded two Chinese-made MA-60 aircraft fleets.
Merpati Nusantara Airlines and Myanmar Airways were instructed to take the fleets out of service to allow airworthiness checks to take place following a series of accidents.

A Merpati MA-60 crash-landed at El Tari Airport in Kupang, east Indonesia on 10 June. On the same day a Myanmar MA-60 skidded and overshot the runway after landing at Kawthaung Airport.

The badly damaged Merpati aircraft is unlikely to fly again according to airline official Harry Saptanto.

In Yangon Myanmar's director general of Civil Aviation, Tin Naing Tun, said the Myanmar Airways aircraft, which was also badly damaged, is likely to be grounded permanently.

State-owned Merpati has a fleet of 13 aircraft, from 15 that were ordered in 2005. One that was delivered in 2008 was lost following in a crash in 2011 in west Papua, killing 25 people of the 27 on board.

Indonesian Ministry of Transportation spokesman Bambang Ervan expects checks on Merpati's fleet to take at least three months, while Tin was unable to say how long Myanmar Airways fleet of three will be grounded.

The MA-60 “Modern Ark” is a regional turboprop aircraft made by the Xi'an Aircraft Industry Company (XIAC). Merpati took delivery of the first aircraft in 2008 and was undecided whether it wanted the remaining 14, which remained parked outside the XAIC plant in Shaanxi Province, as the airline was unhappy with its operations.

Good pull SD. I always try to avoid commie metal. I'd rather be in an 80 year old DC3. Soon we'll have the option of The Death Highway'' or 'Death Airways'.

nothing will change unless AirAsia or JetStar or other low cost airlines start flying to snooky.

and even then, customers will be scammed by taxis and tuktuks in the airport, or even robbed on the road as they do in Otres.

it would make more sense to build a new airport straight on Koh Rong so they will skip snooky and head to the beach without dealing too much with the local mafia.

snooky's bad reputation is well earned, the water is dirty, the beach is a dump, what the fuck are the tourists expecting ? the bargirls are stale and looking like old tired whores, the only way to enjoy that place is to be drunk 24x7 so you won't notice all the shit and the scams.

Good to hear that another airlines is trying to break the Vietnam Air (Cambodia Angkor Air) strangle hold on the Snooky airport. The question is, is this another "government of China" owned/backed business like the American company Interstate Hotels and Resorts that signed a deal to plow one billion dollars into Ko Pous Island in Snooky? If the Cambo government doesn't screw it up (like they did with Chevron) the Ko Pous island project could be a game changer and the first big project in Snooky that is not a money laundering scam and backed by a whole government (China.) BTW/ Airasia tried to fly to Snooky, but the fees were to high. (Vietnam controlled government blocking flights to Snooky so they can funnel tourist to Phu Quoc.) Got to pay for that new airport somehow.) Snooky is the only city/town in Southeast Asia that you can walk out the back of the casino/hotel onto a natural (not man made) beach.

I wonder who in the Cambo government got big stacks of $$$ to ok the paperwork to fly in Cambo as Cambodian Airlines (owned 49% by Philippine Air) has much better Bombardier Q-400 turboprop airplanes setting on the tarmac in the Philippines waiting for the ok from the Cambo government to start flying.

The Y7-MA60 looks like a copy of the Antonov turboprop.(not a plane I will ever fly in!) They state that in the near future they are going to have an airbus also. With the heavy schedule and only two turboprops I wonder how many cancelations there will be as they haven't factored any time in for maintenance. (fly it until the wheels drop off?)

As to the comment on Snooky being a dump. Yes , the downtown beach is not clean, but there are other beachs that have clean/clear water/sand. I live 5 min walk from Hawaii beach and its really nice, but Independence is the best. Bar girls stale? Not any more or less than Phnom Penh although being bigger Phnom Penh has more of a selection. The downtown Snooky beach reminds me of the downtown beach in Pattaya years ago and we all know Pattaya never grew and doesn't get many tourists. BTW/ I'm not a drunk and enjoy seaside living in Snooky everyday.

Snooky Airport scamming? I got a flight out of Snooky and booked the airport bus from downtown (BTW/ It travels both ways.) No scam there and the driver was probably the best bus driver I've ridden with.

You can't compare Ochheuteal to Pattaya for God's sake. Only cretins go in that water. Jomtien would be a better analogy. The water at Ochheuteal is bad after rains and big holidays when the toilets get overtaxed. The rest of the time I have no problem swimming there. Independence is good, but not as good as Sokha or the end of Otres down by Tamu, because the beach disappears at high tide.

Sailorman, i appreaciate your optimist outlook, but ...

You agree the main beach is a dump, so why the tourists should go there ?
Otres is no more the pristice place it was 2-3 yrs ago, it's over developed, the water has been polluted, and by night is also full of robberies and the tuktuk ask crazy prices to go and back.

Victory Hill is a dead man walking and the beach is now being closed and redeveloped.

you have the islands but they're totally overpriced and overestimated, the beaches in the islands are ok but nothing impressive.

yes, Independence beach is my favourite too but you will never see busloads of tourists going in snooky just for that, it's a beach like any other everywhere in south east asia, even in Vietnam there's much better ...

sorry but snooky will never be the new Samui and neither the new Pattaya, they already tried everything in that damn place and still the only biz working fine are the 3$ BBQ on the beach and the casinos and the 0.5$ beers.

unless they fix the systemic issues plaguing snooky nothing will ever change or improve.
nothing ever works in snooky but they pretend to ask prices on par with PP and SR, sorry not gonna happen and modern tourists do everything online, they're just one click away from booking a better destination for the same price.

snooky could boom only if AirAsia starts flying a few A320 from BKK and KL, but this too for the well known mafia reasons isn't gonna happen.

moral of the story, snooky will get worse, not better, because they don't even make any maintenance on the roads and they use the cheapest materials for everything, after every rain season the town is in shambles, nothing is build to last in snooky and it's no surprise the only regular tourists going there belong to the typical "farang ki nok" variety.

nobody is getting rich with snooky, not even the casinos (too many), if there wasn't a constant supply of low-end bargirls and freelancers snooky would be already gone and forgotten.

my opinion ? sex is the only attraction that snooky can offer, they should push in this direction and making it a poorman's pattaya rather than dreaming about 5 stars resorts and rich tourists coming in droves.

sex tourists are loyal, they rent for long time, they don't give a shit about polluted water or the beach and they come even in low season when it's raining all day long.
