Why is it that Robin Williams' death (rest In peace) has caused more attention and emotion than the Ebola pandemic (fatal virus) in Africa?

Read some of his crap over the last 2/3 days.
Don't see him raising profiles or even awareness of the death tolls of Gaza/Cairo/Africa...I think you get my point.

In a word: empathy.
People are interested to things they can relate to. Strange people dying of a strange disease in a strange country are less engaging than an actor whose movies were culturally influential.
There are also studies that analyse the death toll required to overcome the distance to the news room in order for an event to be reported.
