The Kite Patch

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

The Kite Patch

Post by wackyjacky »

It's a small (maybe 1"x 1") nontoxic patch that blocks mosquito's ability to detect CO2 for up to 48 hrs. It was backed by Bill & Melinda Gates & the NIH. They're looking for organizations to distribute product as we speak. Kite's website - http://www.kitepatch.com/#

it [s]can[/s] HAS to be applied to clothing...

what are the ingredients of this magic (probably) fragrance thing ?
What are Kite Patch’s active ingredients?
Our scientists have developed patent-pending and proprietary (trade secret) formulas that utilize breakthrough compounds found in food flavors and fragrances that specifically target the mosquitoes’ receptor neurons used to detect carbon dioxide.

perhaps one basis could be co2-receptor antagonists (e.g. butanal, couldnt find others) ?

there is the reserach, but still doesnt say what it is...

Chemicals like hexanal block the CO2 receptor; others, such as 2-butanone, mimic CO2's activity, fooling insects into thinking CO2 is present. Ray is most excited about the third class - ultra-prolonged activators of the CO2 receptor, such as 2,3-butanedione. 'Even brief exposure can stimulate the sensory neuron so strongly it keeps firing for several minutes, preventing CO2 detection,' he says.

I've been bugging them [hi vlad] to send me a few here since they first launched the kickstarter. They still won't ship outside the US, I think for fear of Chinese duplication before they have their time on the market. Frustrating to say the least. Perhaps i'll add it to my import list, since I'll be there to receive them.
