Rong Rattana was watching. Rattana, a Child Protection Coordinator for the Cambodian non-governmental organization Action Pour Les Enfants (APLE), had been on the American man's trail after seeing him ride through the city of Siem Reap on a motorbike with a young Cambodian boy in tow. For months, Rattana and other APLE investigators followed the man.

He was living on the outskirts of town, in a $1.2 million home outfitted with a pool and a water slide. The man, Jack Sporich, was a retired engineer who'd moved to Cambodia from Arizona, after spending nine years in US prison and another three in a state hospital for molesting young boys.

Meh. I think APLE is feeling a bit vulnerable of late and felt they needed a little friendly publicity to try to shore up their slowly tarnishing reputation. The Daily hasn't been as kind with them as they used to be, the last few articles casting APLE in a less than wholly favorable light. APLE's dubious involvement in busting their previous director on pedo charges, who happened to be in a dispute with another previous APLE director, smacked of conflict of interest. Worse, the busted APLE director made the same allegations against APLE as many others who have been busted by APLE, ie that he was set up on bogus charges by APLE for ulterior motives. Then the recent appeal hearing for Fletcher in which the Daily seemed to portray APLE as cavalierly brushing aside a lack of due process and apparent glaring factual inconsistacies in the case in favor of procedural technicalities that work to deny him retrial. APLE felt compelled to issue a 'clarification' after that one. It's one thing to have expats and sex tourists muttering doubts about APLE. It's quite another when the Daily (the mainstream press) starts hinting at doubts. It was, after all, the Daily's work that ultimately lead to the downfall of the most moneyed, connected, storied anti-trafficker in Cambodia, Somaly Mom. If it could happen to her, it could happen to any of them. So time for an APLE-friendly puff piece. I would't be surprised to see a couple more similar articles in other publications in the near future. The PR department at work.

'stalks' is a very bad choice of word, negative connotations. Any organisation that locks up kiddy-fiddlers is positive.
