A Frenchman says he was told by a representative at the French Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia that in order to marry his Cambodian sweetheart he did NOT have to show that he made over $2,500 USD a month because he was under the age of 50.
Surely that information can't be correct?

Hello,
Just came back from the French Embassy and thought I would share with you all an information they gave me as that is not what I understood from the various websites and posts found online :
In order to marry a Cambodian woman, you do NOT NEED 2500$ per month UNLESS you are older than 50 years old.
50 years old and older : need 2500$ per month
Under 50 years old : no need for this
I was quite stressed during the interview as that was not my understanding but the staff quickly reassured me on this particular point.
Hope that will help & relax some of you ...
Have a lovely day in sunny Cambodia
The French want to make sure you can support your wife and that she will not have to hook to support you
What interview were you attending? You shouldn't have to interview at the French embassy to marry a Cambodian woman in Cambodia.
Yes you do dear Gavin as the first part of the process (for us) is to get the French authorization to marry which require an interview of both the future husband and wife
How strange. For Australians, you just fill in a request form, then they issue you a Non-Impediment to Marriage certificate, which is then given to Ministry of Interior.
Over 50 not possible to marry a khmer lady unless you want to pay some officials between 5.000 - 10.000 $.... under Cambodian law from 2013. Better try to marry her in another country. Good luck
Mate I'm 49 and I needed to show the MoF and the MoI that I had monthly income of this amount or more! Trust me I'm going through this painful process now and I can assure you that this is not correct information but you will need to find this out when you start at the MoFA with the check list they provide to you. Good Luck Mate and bring loads of money to pay all the Bribes!!
Dear Mark, thank you very much for your valuable feedback. I guess from the reactions that the French embassy staff gave me the wrong information after all... It is indeed a painful and long battle that I might lose not earning this amount of money every month... Let's wait and see...
Mate trust me this complete process is just crazy and my Khmer Fiance was speaking Khmer Khmer to these people to make sure we understood exactly what we needed to provide and still they play games. MoFA has a clear list of what you need but this all changes once you go to the MoI and the MoI guys do nothing but take money from you and a lot of money!! I needed Payroll slips from my company that needed to be in color and stamped by the company I needed to provide my work permit and needed to show my Visa was up to date and that I never had problems with Immigration. If you have a French Passport expect Bribes to be large and often!! The MoI told me I needed a complete FBI background check or pay a bribe of $500. I started this process on Feb 8th 2017 and still working on it hoping to get my approved paperwork back from MoI at the end of June then need to take it back to my wife's commune for final signature. All I can say is bring your wallet as you will need to dip into it many times.
It would be easier and cheaper (maybe) to go on a cruise and get the Captain to marry you in international waters. I'm not 100°/° sure, but I think that it is legally binding in most countries, regardless of age, money, ect. I'm happy to be corrected.
Go to Thailand a Cambodian wedding is not recognized in the UK anyway
I am French and the marriage will be recognized without a problem by the Embassy
It is recognized by the Family Courts in the UK. It is just that it is considered of no value in obtaining a visa to the UK, and in Australia, where there is a need for the Cambodian to show that they have sufficient means to cover the visit and that there are sufficient ties to Cambodia that the visitor to the UK is going to return to Cambodia after the visit to the UK. Both Scotland and Australia has "common law spouse" law which gives rights after cohabitation with the intent to live as if married. Cambodia has no such "common law spouse" protection so on dissolution or death the surviving partner gets nothing.
Some ASEAN countries require that a Khmer woman have a letter stating "no impediment to marriage" issued by the Cambodian authorities. Since 2011 if you are over 50 there is a total ban on marrying a Khmer woman in a Cambodian "Legal" marriage and it will be difficult to get any overseas marriage recognized under a Cambodian Law (the overseas marriage has to be registered with the nearest embassy/consulate who apply the same rules). The over 50s rule was announced by a letter from the MoFAIC to embassies and is intended to reduce trafficking and Cambodia having to rescue "brides" who are in servitude in places like Taiwan. Below 50 you have to show proof of income...
Its freakin stupid! A 51 year old foreign male cannot marry a 90 year old Khmer woman, but a 51 year old foreign female can marry a 18 year old khmer boy. Here's another stupid regulation. If you are 49 year old guy, with 10 ex-wives and you want to marry a Khmer woman, you still need a permission letter from your dear old mum.
Hong Kong & Australia only require a statutory declaration of no impediment. In the UK both parties must be in the UK for at least 7 weeks before the UK marriage.
What about marrying my Cambodian fiancé... what steps do I need to take for that in order for us to get married because I have plans on living and starting a life out here in Cambodia?
Should be no trouble at all as you are not a male foreigner
Ok thank you so much... would you happen to guide me or be able to help with some information on how to go about getting married with my fiancé if it's not to much to ask of you... please and thank you I'd really appreciate it?
I am in the middle of this mess CourtneyMarie Sum ^^ so I will be more than happy to help once I finish the entire procedure IF I am still alive haha
Ok thank you very much Corentin Lebigot any information that you find out will be very helpful and I'd be so appreciative and you can message me with any information that you've come across yourself would help out my fiancé and myself
Your embassy says that, but what does the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Interior say? Please report back once you've processed your documents at those ministries.
No Problem I will dear Erin . I am just sharing an information given to me this morning, that might be false considering the numerous feedbacks from people who went through this process
Your embassy is shit then. NO marriage allowed for over 50s, and that's Cambodian law not french opinion
I will make sure to transmit the message to the French embassy dear Iain Donnelly haha considering the many remarks from people who actually went through this process, I might have a word with the lady who gave me this apparently fake information
