NEW TOYS! CEO is upgrading!

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

NEW TOYS! CEO is upgrading!

Post by OrangeDragon »

But that also means there may be a little downtime as we transition over. Weekends are out slowest traffic periods, so I will be launching this Sat. morning. During the actual transition there will be about an hour of downtime, after that the database will be pointing to the new server from both the old server version of the site and the new. We will leave it this way while the DNS updates globally, so that should be the ONLY downtime anyone experiences. Once it's clear the new DNS is updated for all hosting companies we'll then drop our old server and be slick and shiny on a new dedicated box.

Thanks for your patience!

The response times from your current server are pretty good. But if new balloons and streamers make you happy, go to it boys!

So just what does this new setup do? In simpleton language, please.

For one, it should be even faster. :-D

For two, it won't be shared with a bunch of other businesses... so we'll have a little more control of what I can make it do. For example, a mod we've wanted is the URL rewrite so instead of "/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1306" it would be "/NEW-TOYS-CEO-is-upgrading.html"

Search engines like it more, and people seeing the link like it more. Makes backups easier, makes future hardware upgrades easier, etc.

It's mostly for me... you guys won't see much, lol.

I trust you'll let the community know if dollars need to be kicked in for rack space...

I mean, you guys are free to donate ;-)

My preferred method of payment is Makers Mark or Mezcal Tequila.

But really my other hosting business + the ad revenue here covers it. One of the main reasons I'm doing it right now instead of 6 months from now is that I had to increase my space anyway to accommodate 2 new clients, and their added yearly fees made the cost practical to make the jump.

LoL, we should go to a subscription model. Everyone needs to donate 1 bottle a month to keep our memberships active.

We have about 350 members, so we'd be set (and drunk) for life! !
