Man Killed by Fireworks During Close of King’s Anniversary C
A man was killed and five others were injured Wednesday night when fireworks marking the 10-year anniversary of King Norodom Sihamoni’s coronation misfired and flew at the revelers in Phnom Penh’s Chroy Changva district, officials said.

I happened to be watching with some family tonight and the very last firework was clearly a misfire. You could feel the percussion from in front of the Royal Palace. There was no visible flash. I said to the Woman at the time that something went wrong with that one.

Re: Man Killed by Fireworks During Close of King’s Anniversa
Wife and I have already been discussing it. It's a shame that poor safety practices like these mar an entire industry... Those fireworks shouldn't have been close enough to people that a misfire would have that impact.
The big issue is Khmer seem to think they need to be right on fucking top of them to enjoy them... i've had this issue in my shows to the point i now hire security to establish a perimeter and keep it from being crossed when i do a show. Really, for stuff on the river there all of the shots should be done FROM the river on a barge or from the Sokha hotel rooftop... or even from the other side of the river. Nothing should be fired on the city side of the river.
Another issue is that METAL canisters should NEVER be used. Ever. At all.
When you put an explosive in metal, you get a pipebomb, not a firework. Any actual professional in the industry knows that as a VERY basic of safety knowledge, the pyro company is 100% at fault here. What happened is very simple... either the lift charge failed to lift out of the tube (or go off at all) and the main shell effect went off in the tube, or the lift charge "pushed through" to the main charge when it went off... either way, neither is a "big" problem if the tube is industrial cardboard or fiberglass because they will split/shred but won't shatter into lethal shrapnel.

I just saw pictures posted on FB of the deceased and others injured, very gruesome therefore I am not going to repost the images here.
My condolences to the family and friends of those killed and injured, a terrible incident. I hope the amateurs responsible for the fireworks are bought to justice, although I highly doubt it, it will probably be waved off as just a freak accident.

I just say this part:
"which were being set off by soldiers"
[facepalm]
There you have it... complete untrained amateurs, with no legal recourse.
And "We are investigating why they broke apart" means nothing will be done... as no investigation is needed. Fireworks sometimes do that, which is why you use less dangerous tube materials.

Couldn't agree more. I'm sure you long term residents are used to it, but as someone new to the place I was unaware with the gory fascination here with unpleasant situations. Same in Thailand though. I sometimes click on Cambodians FB pages that are within threads I'm reading and some of the videos they post are disgusting. If this is what people watch for entertainment it's a pity.PSD-Kiwi wrote:Oh great, now there's videos off the deceased all over FB, the poor guys lying there dead with his internal organs spilling out all over the place and there's someone going through his pockets, and dozens of others standing around taking pictures and videos with their phones!
