SHV Foreigners living in the dumps (ie.40-60$ rooms)

Why are there so many foreigners living in squalor, down at the end of shitty laneway, up a broken ruble path in 4x5m rooms, driving a broken down moto. It's amazing how many 'expats' you see like this! Surely they could live a better life elsewhere, or atleast afford a bigger room for 100-120$ with decent and convenient road access.

Living in a cheap place means more money to spend drinking. a abrokendown moto is to safeguard it getting stolen. I guess many expats are living off a pension. They probably had enough of Western high maintenence bull in their youth, and now have gone 'bare basics'.

Where's whiskyfrom mekong?

I'm sure they're loving their room when they can't even go for whizz without locking their front door cause of the meth heads next door. They must sure like pushing their broken down bikes to the nearest (closed) shop at midnight without having to worry about getting it stolen. Going 'bare basics' is a choice usually by those who have money but choose to live a minimalistic yet good lifestyle, these people are not it! Most of these guys are actually in their thirties to fifties, hardly of pensionable age.
And I don't get your last sentence, are you saying they use to live the high life back home but purposefully moved here to live poorer than their Khmer neighbours? Not buying that!

Even if they could I reckon they've burnt all their bridges! There was a guy a in front of me at Samudera tonite, he bought two cartons of Winston, three bottles of that Ruskov vodka, and an assortment of viet noodle packages (not the korean imports). That's it! When I walked out he was still trying to get his bike going, frantically hitting the electric starter while kicking the starter pedal, obliviously flooding the engine. I told him he should wait a few minutes before trying again...he just looked at me like a fool. Anyway, I saw him driving out of some meth infested hooker shacks by CT clinic a couple hours later...hence the post.

Well it's no secret that Shnoukie does have it's fair share of tramp like expats who seem to have somehow degraded to the poverty kinda living that you find around places like blue mountain, etc. Who knows, maybe once they were cool, and had investments. Maybe what then started as fun led to them becoming like that?? Maybe various things. Cambodia has a way with some people....

Yea, and maybe some can't afford a ticket back home, and others are just wanting to stay put as long as they can for whatever reason, maybe the idea of returning is scary, and maybe they have reasons for not going home??

:rave: :bored:
