How much do the poorest people pay for rent? I know they probably don't have electricity or running water or even toilets. How much do they pay?

Come and see our immediate neighbours.

Rock bottom Khmer rentals are $25 / $30 / $40 / $50* a month in Siem Riep with one or two footprint loos for 5 family units, a pump worked with a handle (shared) and a
pay-per-meter electricity supply.

It is quite common for 2 or 3 or 4 unrelated people to share.

This is NOT at all the vile squalor of Engels' CONDITION OF THE WORKING CLASS IN ENGLAND IN 1844 or Jack London's PEOPLE OF THE ABYSS; however, to an outsider (probably a Westerner who grew up in comfortable circumstances) seeing it for the very first time it looks a lot worse than it really is.

* The $50 rentals usually include one's very own loo, probably a footprint loo and more rarely a pedestal loo.

That doesn't sound too bad. Better than when I was in jail or homeless.

in Sihanoukville
$30 can get you a room with a bed, a bathroom that consists a squat toilet + a cornered off section thats filled with water used for a bucket shower + water to flush the squat toilet, rooms have electricity,

these are the cheapest rented rooms i know about, and have stayed over in them on quite a few occasions (my friends places)
usually range between $30-50 depending on the quality of the place/age/location

dont think you will get cheaper than that, i have stayed with friends whos families live in the wooden houses/ tin houses in some of the more local areas, but i dont think these places are rented,

i dont have much in the way of photos,
but this is an area down an alley at the Golden Lions Roundabout, i have quite a few friends who live down here and they were paying i think $30pm (Feb2014)
this is the entrance, you walk through and there is a load of rooms

I rented a 2 bedroom, kitchen and large living area bamboo hut for 100 thai baht per month ($3.30 at the time) . It was in BTB Providence no running water or bathroom. The land lady would bring me water from the local wat that was about 300 meters away.
