Some questions

Hello, I'm budRich.

I currently live in Sweden. I've worked as a cnc-operator for 10 years. 3 friends of mine asked me if i wanted to share an appartment with them in cambodia. I think i'll make the move. However i think i will only stay with the guys for a month and then get my own appartment. They are looking for adventure, i just want peace and freedom. Also they're pretty much broke and i'm not, takes no einstein to see where that is going...

I don't know if i will like it in cambodia, I barely left sweden for my entire life. But i know i'm tired of this place. I want to live pretty cheap and don't have high standards. But internet is important, i see there is 4G available, that's what i currently uses and im happy with that. How is the coverage, is it only available in Phom Penh and the tourist heavy areas, or is there calmer cheaper places where it works?

I'm a worker, and it would be really cool if one could get a job. Is there any sort of need for skilled metalworkers? I got a computer project that i will work on, but i like them routines.

Also, how is the coffee?

If you're looking to work then Phnom Penh is the best place with the highest chance of a decent income but if you're after 'peace and freedom' and can support yourself, which it sounds like you can, then living near the coast is the better option with nicer climate and much much much less traffic and noise. Maybe in Sihanoukville but the even quieter Kampot sounds like it could be perfect for you. Not sure if they have 4G yet in Kampot but definitely 3G.

At the coast you can live peacefully on $500-$1000 USD a month easily.

If you have money then you will have lots of men/women wanting to be your boy/girlfriend.

If you want 'peace and freedom' don't get a boy/girlfriend.

Coffee can be very good if you find the right one for you.

Coffee is largely fake over here. If you get coffee, get something you can see ground in front of you and then brew it yourself. That's the safest way to go, trust me. I used to be a coffee wholesaler.

Thanks for the awnsers, guys. I will check out both Sihanoukville and Kampot, and other places too. I know the infrastructure in the country isn't the best. Is it difficult to travel between these places and Phnom Penh by bus, how long will it take? 700$ a month sounds like my style. 3G works, I had that kind of connection with bad reception when i lived in a small cottage in the swedish woods, and I survived. If good coffee is hard to come by, i might try to quit my addiction to it, prior moving to Cambodia. I'm quitting snus tomorrow, and the two goes hand in hand. I'd rather drink good tea then bad coffee.

Me and the other guys are having dinner this Friday. I have gathered them to talk about our forthcoming trip. Is there anything in particular we should be sure we're on the same page on?

Good coffee can be found. Either buy at a foreigner-owned shop or one of the chains: Gloria Jeans, Brown's or Costa. As with anything, ask around the town where the good, REAL coffee is.

I wouldn't necessarily scrub that ide out, the SHV SEZ has a number of factories and it's possible you could pick up a job with a multinational as a super. I can see an experienced tool-maker getting a look in.
