basically I just need a cleaning and checkup -- maybe a filling replaced -- as painless as possible and with confidence that they won't try to sell me a lot of things i do not need. am I better of waiting to go to Bangkok?

I see Roomchang (Spelling?) get some good reviews but it seems andyinasia (in another forum) thinks very poorly of them too.

Suggestions?

I don't think andy's bad reviews had anything to do with their technical skills, more management problems.

I used roomchang for over tens and was very happy until they moved premises and became a dental hospital , less friendly , more formal and business like, more expensive and as for those guards!

I went to Roomchang once and told myself I wouldn't return. They certainly look very good. Machines/seats are top-notch and the whole place looks like a western dentist's office would (non-British, of course) and most people I know have had a good experience there. However, I wasn't pleased when I went there maybe 2 years ago.

I went for a simple cleaning (priced at 20$).The dentist went around to cleaning my teeth in a way which I'd never seen done before (usually dentists follow a certain methodology which is pretty standard and easy to follow). Now get this: he told me he couldn't clean my wisdom teeth because they were "too far". SERIOUSLY?! Have you EVER heard a dentist say that?! How about you find a way to reach in dipshit. He also forgot to clean my teeth (he scrapped them, but then didn't polish). You know tat squeaky-clean feeling you get after seeing a dentist? I had the complete opposite: felt like I had 1cm of tartar built up on my teeth. Got two x-rays done, which were then added to the total (so 30$ total). I wouldn't have minded had I been informed the additional costs, but after the bad cleaning this definitely added to my pissed-offizness. Even if the guy was a scrub, I've never seen such an unprofessional dentist in my life. I know it was probably a one-off and I could request a different dentist, but the experience was so bad I just looked at other options.

After seeing some recommendations from some members on K440 I've been going to La Belle on st.110 (south west of Psah Chah) for around 2 years now. Great work for 10$. She cleans thoroughly and her demeanor is quite professional. Her equipment is obviously more basic (Viet or Chinese-looking chairs), but she's thorough and does a good job for a great price. Several foreigners go there and many have had big work done for quite cheap (and years later are still satisfied with the results). I've also heard good stuff from Asia-Euro clinic or something like that. BTW, I've only ever had basic cleanings done in Cambodia so can't comment on anything extensive. My teeth are pretty damn awesome (dentists often comment), hopefully they stay that way for a long time. Wish they were a bit whiter though. Oh well...

So let me qualify this by saying I HATE going to the dentist... they're like a religion trying to sell you on their beliefs (true or not) and loading you with guilt when you don't follow "the way".

That said, I LOVE going to this one:

They're about to open up an even nicer clinic out closer to the airport, she speaks great English, and both her and the hygienist that assists her have found the most comfortable position to work on your teeth involved their boobs pressed firmly against your cheek... helps to distract you from the sound of the drill/etc I've found.

Really top notch, I had a chipped front tooth from 2006 going black on me and chipping away more and more... thought for sure it was going to be a root canal. She saved the tooth and sorted it with 2 fillings. That, an X-ray, and a cleaning all set me back $25.

Her new clinic (a second one, they're not going to close the one by the old market) will be on Kampuchea Krom I believe...

I am being such a lazy bastard with an obvious big cavity in my last back molar. I don't hate the drill.... I hate the fucking novacaine shots. I have only ever had 1 dentist in my life and his practice used needle injected novacaine(lidocaine?) for procedures.

I assume over at Labelle, they use needle injected pain killer before a filling? Or is it Nitrous to get you all goofy?

Needle, but they are pretty damn gentle with it.

From personal experience Roomchang is very good.
Cleaning and checkup should be both cheap and painless and if they tell you you need additional treatment you can always wait for a second advice at Bangkok. Additionally you can ask for the X-ray and send them to your dentist back home for a second opinion (personally I have done it and know acquaintance who did the same)

Generally speaking when you go to high level practice targeting the upper level of the local population and expat you can be pretty confident that they will not try to over-treat you. That it is not a winning long term strategies with a part of the population which is highly susceptible to ask for a second opinion with professional on the same level of competence.

Like when the top hospital in the area wants to sell you a $10 sachet of Royal D?
