how to get money in Phonm Penh

Are there atm's etc. where i can use atm card in Phonm Penh or must one bring cash US dollars? And in either case which is most economical . Also is it better to use us$ directly or change into local currency ?

Its a bit of a worry. I did a survey last month for a fella I was working with, on the ATM's in Sihanoukville. There are only 43 here, not including those inside casino's and resorts. So my guess is there's probably only a couple of hundred in PP. This country is just SO behind the times.

There are plenty of ATMs in town which will give you US $, so you just need to bring a bit of US $ cash for when you first arrive to pay your visa, taxi and hotel. You don't need to change $ to riel (local currency) because they are interchangeable and $ are accepted everywhere. It's very easy.

there are ATMs everywhere in the touristy areas of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville etc.
all give out $US
bring some $US over with you for when you arrive, but you can use the ATMs with little trouble
a little tip though, dont take out any round number of hundreds $100/$200/$300 etc.. as it can be a real pain sometimes paying with a $100 bill, i normally take out $80 at a time

Jamie, I find ABA ATM's give out 10's and 20's every time. At least down here they do and they "only" charge me a $4 fee.
