Does a Khmer national need a passport to enter Vietnam?
I know it wasn't needed a few years ago, but I'm guessing this has changed? What's the minimum ID needed to go to Saigon by bus? I'm 90% sure they now need a passport, but would like to have someone confirm whether I'm right or wrong.

I've never been to Vietnam. But sure we need a passport to enter Vietnam, but for entering to provinces which are near Khmer border is no need.

She means that if you live in a Cambodian province adjoining Vietnam, you can usually cross the border with just an ID card to go to the market or whatever.
If you're a going traveling beyond that Viet border province, you need a passport.

Gf's mother does it all the time. I don't think she even has an ID. She costs quite a bit more than family members with a PP though. Those with out one just pay the bus company extra.

Yes. Cambodian needs passport to enter Vietnam, however we still can enter Vietnam or Thailand without passport. I have been to Ho Chi Minh city twice without passport, but it is really expensive to enter without passport. We will have to pay $20 when we enter and leave the country. I reckon it is the permission letter fee. When we buy the ticket we will be asked if we have passport. If we don't have our ticket will be included the $20 and the bus company staff will do all the works for us at the border. Note, tell him or her not to forget to bring his or her ID.
